I honestly didn't know they still existed. I last used them in 1992! But this couple tried and failed to use them.

Travellers' cheques can't be cashed but couple told there's no problem

Lynda and Graham Turner bought thousand of dollars worth of US and Canadian dollar travellers' cheques from American Express, but couldn't find anywhere to cash them.

They tried four banks at the start of their North American trip in Trail in British Columbia, who all said they could not cash the cheques over the counter, citing "fraudulent activity".

.....

One of the banks in Trail said the couple would have to open an account and deposit the cheques into the account, which would take two weeks to clear.

Maybe someone tell them about AFF so they can learn some new ways of using money overseas and maybe even earn some point?

However still accepted in major Dept stores and chain restaurants as well as hotels. But now prefer points earning.

We found some really old travellers' cheques and took them to the US last year. Had to deposit them into a bank account, although instant withdrawal was allowed. It wasn't a short process time wise. Agree that I'm not sure why anyone would still get them.

One call to Amex would have sorted them out. But yeah, it isn't 1980 anymore.
