Today's views are brought to you with one particular AFFer in mind. But who doesn't love a red fire truck? They appear to still be operational.

I'm sure the years tell the tale, but those outriggers don't look like they provide all that much stabilisation for that outreach. You wouldn't want a big burly fireman with a damsel in distress under each arm swinging off the top!!

Earlier today we stopped by the Raffles. After baulking at paying for a Singapore Sling at our hotel, somehow the wife had me buy TWO at this joint. $SG31 each! Madness!

Ah, the irresistible delights of the Long Bar.

Methinks there is method in her madness.

We had a day out at a different office today. Mrs Oatek's Uncle was attached to the Guards Armoured Division, and came ashore at Arromanches some days after the initial invasion. His division was heavily involved in the Operation Bluecoat to break out around Caen. These are some sites associated with his service in France.

One of the many WW2 cemeteries inland from the Normanday Beaches, this one at Saint-Charles-de-Percy. There were many men from the regiments that in peace time guarded Buckingham Palace who in war time put on the same uniform as everyone else and fought and died in France and Germany. (Who can forget the section of the Guards under Lord Lovat marching off the Normandy beaches behind a Piper in the Longest Day - a true story BTW, re-told in several eye witness accounts).
