Just a question. February, booked flight to Denpasar from Melbourne. with QF frequent flyer points, ONE WAY. Taxes charged were over $200.00. Due to changed circumstances I cancelled and booked PAID flight with Jetstar direct for the next day. Taxes just over 100.00 return.

Today, booking DPS return from Melbourne. (haven't booked yet). Managed to get award seats for dates with QF - taxes over 400.00. Got same flights with Jetstar. Taxes in total, $120.95.

I understand that part of the Qantas component is a booking fee, but surely not to this amount.

Why is this?

Thankyou.

These aren't taxes - they are Qantas imposed fuel surcharges.

Qantas had rolled the fuel surcharge into the regular fare for paid tickets, but includes the fuel surcharge as an extra for award tickets.

If you are planning on economy class travel through an award booking, it's often better just to pay for the fare outright and save the points.

Re: Taxes

+1 to MEL_Traveller . Qantas 'fuel fines' for award redemptions are outrageous. They came on when fuel went up, but never came off when fuel went down again.

Buy a fare and earn some points or even don't earn and save some cash.

Re: Taxes

Just wait until fuel goes up. Fuel surcharge will be more expensive than the base airfare on Qantas flights.

Re: Taxes

thank you for the answers. Flights are expensive now that Tiger is no longer flying to Denpasar. Disappointing re QF fuel surcharge and yes, I can imagine the surcharge will rise again with fuel cost increases.

Think of it more like a copayment. Since the charge never came off when the price of fuel dropped to pre-surcharge levels, it would be reasonable to assume that it's got nothing to do with the cost of fuel and more to do with padding QF's bottom line.

Re: Taxes

It really is outrageous these Qantas fees unlike most major airlines to and from OZ, its annoys the the hell out of lot of loyal QFF members. Wanted to book 2 x Y CNS/DPS/CNS fees and charges were over $500 for 2 of us on JQ can buy 1 fare for under that amount, plus points, its only a 4.5 hr. flight its wrong, greedy and it should be stamped out .

Re: Taxes

I'd rather keep a copay than face an immediate 30% hike in the number of points for my main route as I've just seen on SQ.

I'd personally disagree with you. So easy to earn QFF points these days.

Besides, the point is - this was a fee imposed during a period of high oil prices. There should be no reason to increase the point component if removing the 'fuel' fine given current oil prices.

And that's partly because it costs money to use them.

Sure I'd like something for free. But I'm pretty sure they take the whole cost into consideration and aren't going to suddenly start divvying up the pie in our favour.
