My Platinum status expires end March, and I've just about done enough flying to requalify for gold. Received a call form QF offering to extend platinum status for next 12 months for 100k points. Never heard of this offer, though they do say it's new.
Anyone else had the offer made? Not sure whether to take it up or not.

Never heard anything like this from Qantas. So they are say 100k points equals Platinum. I'd probably take that offer if I had future international travel and could make most of F lounges.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

The equivalent of 600 SCs or so for 100k points seems like pretty good value to me. JASA-like territory without the cash co-pay.

Interesting. Charging points to get a comp.

Do you anticipate doing a lot of flying in your next membership year?

Depends on how many status credits that represents though. If only a few short then maybe not. Interesting idea.

Seems a little odd.
Last year i did a trip in J to Europe and USA that got me 700 sc and 100k in points.

This offer would mean one can go to gold and just trade the points earned for the rest.
If you have an abundance of points you aren't using why not i guess

If its 1000% truly a call from QF, then yes, a very good deal, if you have the 100,000 QFF points.
I would be quite sceptical thought if it were to be me getting such a call.
I won't be getting any calls, personally, this I know, but still, if it were me, I would be sceptical, but if had the points, and after proving bona fide of the caller, wold take said offer.

Do you mind saying how many SC you have actually earned during the last year and if you were comped WP last year or actually earned it?

This sounds like a bizarre offer. Anyone else ever heard of such a thing?

If it truly were that simple it is an absolute carving of WP value - it is just way way way too cheap.

I will have 620 credits by end of status year, so well short of 1200. I've been Plat for 6 years and earned the required credits every year - never been comped.
I was initially quite sceptical of the call, and seeing as no-one else seems to have heard of the offer I'll certainly call the premium desk tomorrow to check it out ...

With that history, I would have thought they should be comping you WP rather than charging 100k points....

It sounds like a good deal, but I can't help feeling it's diminishing the value of status which some of us acquire through lots of dedicated flying amd spend on QF. Good luck to you if you can get it though. Bad luck for everyone else who's payed out of their own pocket (as opposed to their company travel budget)

Interesting.
Wonder if this is being done in lieu of the old comp on the 3yr rule.
100k points is at least $1000 cash value, more in redemptions

I would think this offer wouldn't be made every year to the same person, so after taking it you'd probably then have to requalify flying enough the next year.

Fascinating.

It's a new idea and hot on the heels of DSC I wonder.... what is the goal?

Assuming this is legit, and I don't see why not... the only "positive" for QF is to reduce points liability.

It seems that QF recently seems to equate status with revenue.. as in get a higher status you will probably stay loyal(duh) and provide future revenue.. that is the only logic to this and DSC offers etc (apart from short term revenue by DSC offer type promos).

I find the thinking a bit flawed but I'm struggling to think what the bonus for QF is from this particular offer. Very generous and seemingly a new tactic.

Fascinating to see how this plays out. Please keep us informed should you decide to "buy up"

To play devils advocate and follow on from the thinking of Pleb Status and moa999, in this thread, let's make the odd assumption on the back of info supplied by the OP who was a WP for the previous six years.

Let's say that in the previous two years he/she earned 1600, and 1400 SC's respectively. This year he/she has earned 620 SC's, so in my example 3620 over three years.

The "3600 rule" has been widely quoted here on AFF so one wonders if QF has taken 100,000 points it would not normally have taken.

If this is the "brave new world" I am pleased I am out of it.

Yup not enough data points (ie: anecdotal evidence :) ) to try and figure it out really.

I could see it as an option and QF recognising hey you travelled with us (and partners) far less than you used to. What about a bump up? 580 SC worth though seem extreme.

I could see offering say 300 SC and a challenge to fly the rest in say 3 months with a sweetener of an extension (or just the extension)

On the surface it seems rather odd, but maybe QF is starting to show some more "advanced"(or is that "enhanced"? :) ) abilities in CRM/data mining etc. Or it could be anything (or nothing for that matter)

It will be very interesting if others report similar offers in future.

On the surface it is another devaluation of the value of SC's if this becomes common and thus status. If everyone can get Gold/Plat for values other than the published "market" rate then all bets are off.

I'll note that as previous some other airlines do sell status points/miles/credits (eg: UA offers this tied to new bookings - paid or award)

It's certainly another way to use points.

In the OP's case it's 100K points on top of Gold /620 SCs

How large is your QFF points balance?

Interesting.

If members take up the 100k offer, it will mean the 3-year rule won't exist, as points will become the new norm.
So in the interests of the greater good - I suggest nobody accepts any points for status offer!
