The are getting better and scarier. My father late 70's thought this was a proper request; (note the government logo was also on the email but I dropped it off.)

I am searching the world for crude oil suppliers. I reckon about 9 out of 10 I find are scams, some with very fancy, convincing websites. The sums involved are so great it is worth the investment in IT for them.

My GP mate's receptionist opened an scam electricity account email and have the surgery has been held to ransom. They apparently got everything reloaded at the computer fix it shop, but are still obliged to pay the ransom money. The fix it shop has advised them not to pay. They can access some px info and there's is still the fax machine for recent results. Just out of interest what's the advice on paying the ransom? The GP has also been told that the ransom guys do 'honour' giving back the info once the ransom is paid.

Paying the ransom, whilst stupid, is the only option many companies have. There is only an option of that or rolling back the machine to prior to the infection. There is also no guarantee of not siphoning data off, leaving back doors or targeting them for future infections.

We have spent a small fortune mitigating the risks for our clients as the ransom payments and the associated risks are not worth it. If the site has confidential data, paying the ransom is a breach of some many different things it's not funny.

Don't pay it. They will keep lowering their demands. Even then don't pay.

I am amazed at the naivety of this comment. I think it is a pretty safe assumption you have never worked for a private business before. Hmm. A medical center or accountants that can't access their records or a manufacturer who cant look up their stock or invoice. Time is money and it's the owners money. A lot easier when you can waste someone else's money and have the beauty of misguided principles, but that's not how the real world works. I may not agree with it and think they should have had better options but many times paying the ransom is the lesser of two evils.
