Wonder if QF will sell premium Y on MEL-PER-MEL domestic legs or just allocate to premium tier FF's...

What's the idea here? I don't think they're actually planning to fly the same planes domestically, are they? (Genuine question)

If it's all about the F lounge then the SYD lounge is much nicer than MEL anyway, so going via SYD should not be a huge burden.
QANTAS may use pricing to discourage MEL-SYD-DXB-LHR bookings and even if they don't if it proves popular the cheap premium cabin buckets will sell out quick.

I haven't visited the SYD FLounge yet, but even if the one in SYD is a bit nicer, I'd still prefer QF metal MEL-DXB-LHR if it is still offered over MEL-SYD-DXB-LHR

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Rumour is the flight will originate in MEL and continue on from PER to LHR.

I would say PER-MEL and MEL-PER sectors will be operated as purely domestic, so no F Lounge at MEL. One of the main reasons to operate from T3/T4 in PER.

Also, I would also guess the 14 flights are one in each direction, not double daily. It sounds better for Colin to justify the welfare.

The only way they can do 14 per week with only 4 is to make it less than 14/week for some of the year. AKA "seasonal" service.

That seems to be the way of managing it. Would still be surprised if 14x week PER-LHR, not just 14 "transits" a week, if the flight continues to/from the east coast.

You'll find a few people here who prefer MEL F to SYD F. Count me on the former.

But, you can do a tighter turn around of the plane if you aren't waiting for passengers to pass through immigration, particularly inbound where pax have to collect and recheck luggage ....

Thanks, I hadn't seen that. Seems like that would make things a bit harder from a utilization perspective, but might make it an easier sell to some.

Put me down as a MEL based passenger who would hate to lose the A380 service. Plus the loss of the FLounge on flights to LHR/Europe also be a major downer.

This may be a stupid question so I apologise in advance but couldn't they fly the MEL-PER from and into the international terminals and have the fast tracked clearance with the "D" on boarding passes like they used to do in MEL and SYD when people used to do when taking the JQ flights for those only on the domestic legs. This would negate the need for spending money on new services at the domestic terminal, have the added benefits of allowing passengers to use the international J/F lounges in Melbourne and in Perth. Might even be a selling point for the route. Fly domestic experience international benefits. Or is this just not doable?

That would work for pax on the incoming aircraft from MEL, and those joining in PER, but not for pax arriving in PER on domestic flights from BNE, SYD, CBR, ADL or anywhere in WA - and a big proportion of pax on the new service are expected to come from other parts of Australia. That's why QF was adamant the service needed to be from the domestic terminal in PER, so those incoming pax would not have to bus it to another terminal.

Yes, it's 14 flights per week between PER and LHR - 7 outbound and 7 inbound - i.e. one return flight per day.

It may just be my bias but I prefer the more intimate nature of MEL lounge. Although the views are definitely better in SYD. Plus going via SYD defeats the whole one stop benefit. Plus those in MEL now lose the one stop option to Europe. Unless I'm actually going to London I'm not a fan of going through LHR. Did that enough when studying overseas. Try to avoid it whenever I can now.

QANTAS could probably do a deal to have the flight go from MEL Int to PER Dom but I guess that's wishful thinking.

Very wishful.

Note that the other QFi flights are moving over as well, so it's all about connections for WA regional and SA customers to LHR, SIN and AKL.
While there week undoubtedly be some connecting pax from SYD, MEL I'd expect them to be in the minority.

Wouldn't also be surprised if QF rejigs some of the JNB flights to go via PER. Since the blocking of the QF/SA codeshares, SA has had that route to themselves.

Also presume that QF will shut the PER T1 lounge which will be a loss for JQi pax

Did anyone notice that the media release from Qantas states:
In 2015, Qantas operated a one-off B747-400 charter flight from Perth to Istanbul to take Australians to the Centenary of Anzac at Gallipoli – the last time the national carrier flew from Australia to Europe non-stop.


However the plane flew into SAW airport, which is in the Asian side of Istanbul...

Overall it's good to see a deal has finally been settled. If the service commences from MEL as widely tipped, I would expect the MEL-DXB-LHR truncated to MEL-DXB but not curtailed entirely, with a possible downgauge to 789.

Understand the stopover in SIN or KUL but why land into the continent (presumably paris) just to go to the UK by train?

If the flight number and aircraft is going all the way from MEL-PER-LHR, then it would do MEL Int to PER QF terminal (intl side) under new arrangements of having immigration at QF terminal. It would streamline operations to avoid domestic flight. If different flight numbers, but same aircraft then it would probably do MEL-PER all on domestic side.
