Canoeing is on again  All I can think of is
"By the shore of Gitche Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
At the doorway of his wigwam,
In the pleasant Summer morning,
Hiawatha stood and waited."

My daughter and friend will be in Rio in next several hours, arriving from Peru. Hoping their stay will be safe and enjoyable.

Oh dear, how not to hit the bar!

https://au.sports.yahoo.com/rio-201...t-on-olympic-dream-thanks-to-his-cough/#page1

The 28-year-old athlete was attempting to clear a height of 5.30 metres when he found himself a little too close to the bar.

At first his legs brushed the bar, causing it to wobble but not fall.

Then, just when Ogita thought he might just get away with it, his gonads got the better of him and smacked the bar causing it to topple.

Of course having a camera right on the bar means it was captured in all its glory.

At least no one can call him a small man.

We were laughing the other day about the person who 'invented' the pole vault. Truly impressive.

Isn't it a legacy of ye olden days of trying to scale fortification walls to bring death to your enemies?

That's how it should be anyway.

The bar should be covered in oil and set alight, while archers rain pointy death down on the athletes from above.

This article caught my attention today. It is unusual for the Germans to be sore losers and of course once you wade through the article it is one former cyclist commenting, fairly in my opinion, on the Mark Cavendish incident yesterday. I watched it live, must have been on the BBC iPlayer app because Channel 7 was probably showing an Australian in the qualifying events for paper folding or the egg and spoon race, and I can't understand why Cavendish did not receive some sort of penalty for the "accident" which was blatantly his fault. He then walked away with a silver medal. Seems very unfair.

Well we watched the woman's soccer match between Sweden and Brazil. This was on Swedish TV.The Swedes got carried away as well.

I guess Cavendish getting a Knighthood for finishing second is now confirmed?

Anyone see the footage of the aussie girl dislocating her shoulder in the javelin event ..... ouch!

That was nasty. And the lack of medical attention was pretty poor. Wouldn't have happened in Sydney to anyone from any country - she would have been overwhelmed with help within seconds from what I saw back then!

Booing the French pole vaulter when he was about to vault was poor form by the crowd but booing him on receiving his silver medal was inexcusable.

Quite a weird tournament when the Opals, the hockey teams and water polo teams have been knocked out without a medal but the boomers have got a really good chance of getting their first medal if not a gold medal.

Bolt wins the 200m easily. Now he's got 8 out of 9 golds with the 4x100m relay to complete the set. Don't drop the baton!

If he gets it he'll have 9 golds and no minor medals which would be unique. 9 golds is as many as anyone has ever won with the exception of Phelps at 23 gold...

Blakinho did a live cross from Rio to a particular radio station in Perth this morning. He is on holiday in Rio and going to quite a few Olympic events. He learnt Portugese at the World Cup soccer in 2014 and the Olympic crowds have made it a bit easier to get to and from events.

Looks like watching pole vaulting for 25-30 minutes while waiting at the clinic earlier this week is going to be my only viewing at this Olympics.

I'm generally a sports fan but have no interest in Olympic sports.

Good to see Greece and Thailand with 2 Gold medals each. ;)

I presume Channel 7 has given up on its Olympic coverage, when I turned the TV on on thursday morning it seemed to be a program set at a kids playground with lots of little bikes racing around.

Who crashed sadly. Brutal sport.

Now, winning the Pentathlon is truly remarkable. Well done Chloe.
