Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Thank you milehighclub - amazing ('inside') knowledge.

Looking up FlightStatus it seems that few aircraft are using the MNL airport at present as many incoming flights are shown as 'delayed.' Not good, given that this airport is busier than MEL for number of passengers.

Diversion to CRK anyone?

Perhaps the pilots can answer - if there was a vestige of a 'soft spot' on a runway, would the landing of even an empty ('ferry flight') A380 cause the situation to deteriorate? Or would such an hypothetical situation never eventuate because the airline sending an A380 would have its procedures and liaison with airport staff in place to ensure that runways and taxiways had to be in an acceptable condition prior to movements being allowed of the 'super heavies'?
They found a crack in the asphalt on runway 06/24. 5 inches deep, 1 meter wide, 9 meters long. Runway closed for repairs. Other runway 13/31 available for narrow body aircraft. Appears that at least 1 aircraft was damaged by FOD before the runway was closed.

With fog in BNE this morning (Tuesday 19 July), QF969, the 0550 TSV - BNE (B738 VH-XZL) took off very punctually, if not a tad early, at 0602 but is arriving at about 0823, 48 minutes late and is presently a little south of OOL.

QF969 (two posts above - Simo's accurate information beat me to it) looks to have had a missed approach at BNE.

QF798, the 0700 BNE to CNS (B738 VH-VXU) is lined up in the queue for takeoff as at 0804. QF505, the 0700 BNE down to SYD (B738 VH-VXT) took off at 0803 so is at least half an hour late.

QF16 diverted to OOL and stayed there for 3 hours before finally arriving at 1116.

News.com.au reported this 747 as coming from AKL!

I wonder if some passengers were offered a road connection to BNE as a road trip would have been quicker. Some passengers would have been happy to remain at OOL as their final destination and would have been offloaded as OOL has immigration facilities

Quickstatus, yes, I was looking for a minute or so for QF19 and independent of your post discovered that it arrived in DRW at 1845 hours NT time, taking off again at 2102 not long ago.

This means a MNL arrival at about 2320, almost five hours late and perhaps a departure of QF20 at 0030 if everything went well and there were no further delays on approach of the inbound.

What were the 'runway issues' requiring a diversion? Congestion? It does not appear if the weather up there is out of the ordinary.

Melburnian1, I think it was Himeno who raised the QF19/MNL - post #3353

Tuesday 19 July 2016 also sees QF23, the 0950 hours SYD - BKK, not having taken off until 1126. A333 Vh-QPE should arrive at about 1725, 40 minutes tardy.

QF581 (1010 SYD - PE, A332 VH-EBS) took off at 1130 (about an hour behind) and should arrive at 1416, 56 minutes late.

No idea, but it would depend in part if customs staff were on duty at the time.

Earlier on Tuesday 19 July, QF11, the 0950 hours SYD - LAX departed at 1053 but is expected to only make a net gain of 13 minutes on the schedule with arrival at 0720, 50 late.

The arrival on Wednesday morning, 20 July of QF94 and QF96 in MEL (after their flights from LAX) is predicted respectively to be half an hour and 40 minutes late.

On Tuesday 19 July, QF16 (B744) departed LAX at 0037 hours (77 minutes late) with BNE arrival on Wednesday 19 suggested as 0700, 50 minutes behind time.

QF2 ex LHR is not expected to depart until 10pm Tues 19/07 (sched 9.30pm) due to LHR's baggage system crashing earlier in the day and subsequent delays in loading baggage (and pre-ordered meals lists).

Pilot has apologised for delay but says we will arrive in DXB on time.

Another delay due to ongoing recalcitrant baggage system causing loading delays ........ according to Cap'n Chris, QF2 departure now 1030pm LHR time or later.....

They waited till all bags loaded before pushback finally at 2238h. Landed at DXB at 0810h. Supposed to board soon at 0900 for 0915 departure.

Did they say all bags had loaded? Wonder if there'll be a few surprises on arrival in SYD....

Someone who landed at Manila.

Unfortunately in some of southeast Asia it is typical for contractors to use 'sub standard mixes': increased profits, shorter life span of the road or as in this example airfield infrastructure. But we cannot throw stones: builders of high rises here have used cheap mainland Chinese cladding that is not compliant to fire safety standards.

On Wednesday 20 July, QF19 (1210 SYD - MNL) departed at 1309 with suggested arrival as 70 minutes late at 1940. Given that the restriction on using the main runway (no A333s or above in weight) one might expect congestion to have increased at this already busy airport.

QF27 followed QF19 out, with the former departing at 1316 hours, 46 minutes late ex SYD for its long Pacific trip to SCL where arrival is estimated same day at 1205, 55 minutes behind time.

The 1050 SYD - JNB (B744) was even worse, not pushing back until a very late 1330, with arrival at 1945 not 1710 predicted, thereby delaying the returning overnight QF64 back to SYD.

Earlier, the 0950 hours SYD - BKK was off blocks at 1010 - not super late - but arrival is predicted at 1715, 35 minutes behind time. SIN-bound QF81 was similarly just 21 minutes delayed in leaving but arrival is suggested as 1725, 40 minutes late.

QF127 today was more or less punctual but the far more recently introduced flight QF127 departed SYD 108 minutes tardy at 1403 with arrival suggested as 2115 tonight, 95 minutes late.

The usually on time QF41 (1350 hours SYD up to CGK) was not airborne until 1502; arrival of A332 VH-EBL should be at about 1918, 43 minutes late.

A333 VH-QPI on the Wednesday 20 July 2005 QF19 (MNL - SYD) took off at 2135 and should arrive on Thursday 21 an hour late at 0710.

The Tuesday 19 QF12 (2230 ex LAX for SYD) did not depart until 0216 hours on Wednesday, so on Thursday 21 it is forecast to be on blocks at SYD at 0920, two hours and 50 minutes late. It must have had a one-off delay unrelated (or only partly related) to the JFK - LAX B744 on that transcontinental QF12 sector, as QF16 for BNE managed to pull out of LAX at 0041 today, 81 minutes late with Thursday morning BNE arrival suggested as 0700, 50 minutes behind time.

Also on Tuesday evening, the MEL-bound QF94 pushed back in LAX at 2311, 56 minutes late and should arrive on Thursday at 0750, 50 minutes tardy that will presumably delay QF93, the 0915 hours return flight across the Pacific to Los Angeles.

'Areas' of fog (not just 'patchy') are predicted for Melbourne on Thursday morning; at 2330, relative humidity was 100 per cent and there were identical temperature and dew point readings at Olympic Park so while as always on matters meteorological it is good to defer to experts, these may be ideal conditions for fog to gradually develop at MEL.
