Has anyone been successful at buying online seats on consecutive flights?

Im looking at some SIN-KUL flights on MH and SQ.

Would the system allow me to purchase el-cheapo seats on consecutive flights.

In case Im late for the first or I arrive early enough to catch the first. Obviously this will result in donating the fare of one ticket to the airline.

How would the airlines know you have purchased seats on each others flights at similar times?

Oh sorry.

Don't think think that will be an issue. I have done that a few times with CX where I have had the same sector booked more than once a day but not sure if they were consecutive flights or not.

Why not book one flight with MH and the later flight with SQ if you are planning to throw the ticket away that's not needed.

What airline are you flying into SIN with? Does that airline belong to an alliance that would through check to MH or SQ on a separate ticket?

OZ,

Am travelling QF35 MEL-SIN // QF8404 SIN-MEL

SIN-KUL on separate ticket
Travelling HLO which will make a 2 PNR itinerary significantly easier

Family Flying SQ232 SYD-SIN, SQ118 SIN-KUL // SQ119 KUL-SIN, SQ251 SIN-SYD

Have to arrive into KLIA main terminal. not the LCCT (thus unable to get a one PNR QF/3K flight, QF/MH ticket unavailable)

My option into KUL are:

SQ118 departing 1845 = 50 minute connection = Unlikely
MH616(codeshare SQ5616) departing 1915 (economy promo)
SQ5342 (MI) departing 2000
MH610 departing 2115 (flex ticket only)

I will be buying return tickets SIN-KUL-SIN so same marketing airline both sectors will be cheaper.
I think SQ is easiest as they seem to have codeshares with MH/MI

SQ5329/MH5731 (MI) arrving 1905
SQ5607 (MH) arriving 2025

(EK 404 departs 2240)

In the back of my mind I was thinking that the 1845hr SQ118 with 50 minute connection is doable with HLO and online checkin. But it will be very tight due to security at Changi being at gates and possibility of QF being delayed.

Cant make up my mind whether SQ5616 or SQ5342.

If anything, that is one reason why it might be doable, as it rooms the variable of transit security! You need to present yourself to security precisely 12 mins before departure, as gate closes 10 mins before departure. At that late stage, you and maybe one or two other stragglers would be going through security and it should take no longer than 30 seconds. I've done this many times (nearly every time I take SQ!)

Having said that, 50 mins is a bit optimistic, in terms of relying on on time arrival from QF and quick taxi from landing to gate.

Have you got any Enrich miles or even QFF points for the short sector.

Can't check right now but BKK-KUL is 8,000 Enrich miles or 8,000 Amex MR points so assuming SIN-KUL the same. Availability could be issue.

With a Qantas award you might be able to cancel at last minute and forfeit the 5,000 QFF point penalty?

Lots of QF points but no enrich.
I'll look at award alternative, but suspect as QF is not selling the MH connection an award would be hens teeth stuff.
Ecojomy promo Sin$50 per sector!.

Why not not buy the MH616 @ 1915 then you have the later MH610 as a backup should you misconnect on the first flight. As MH are OW, QF will through check to MH even on separate tickets - just show your MH itinerary to QF in MEL who will through check your bag to KUL and issue both boarding passes. All you need to do in transit at SIN is get from T1 to T2 to the MH departure gate. Are the timings of QF35 the day you fly 1230/1710?

I would have thought that QF could check you through on MH despite the separate PNRs as they are both OW and certainly interline.
[EDIT: as OzBeachBabe has just pointed out.]
Also I thought OW gave some support for PAX connecting between OW flights even when they were on different PNRs.
But I might have been thinking of OneWorld Global Support which is only available at certain airports, not including SIN.

Yes I am aware that QF can check through to a separate PNR MH flight. However as I will be travelling HLO, and MH/SQ both have online checkin, its sort of a moot point whether there is a benefit from the Alliance. Except in a misconnection situation (and lounge access at QF SIN)

Is the partnership between QF and MH via OW deep enough to provide assistance in the case of a misconnection?. Whatever the relationship, its will be fairly superficial based on the Brass Razoo level of SC one can earn from an MH flight. In this case a WP/Emerald might not make any difference either.

Might be an opportunity to test it.

OWGS is not at SIN as its not a OW hub.

Yes I did acknowledge that.
Just out of curiousity when you say a QF/MH booking on one PNR was unavailable, does that just mean unavailable through the QF website?

You'd have more chance if the MH flight was added in as oncarriage when you checkin at MEL. If this isn't done if the QF flight MEL/SIN is delayed ops won't know you have an onward flight so you wouldn't be re booked SIN/KUL.

Yes that right. QF/MH not avail on QF website.

I suspect QF just gets a small batch of MH connecting flight seats to put on their system. Once its sold the fare disappears. The connecting flight as an MH ticket is still sold as a discounted fare via MH website.

back on Topic,

does MH/SQ allow buying of consecutive flights via their website?, Of course I could buy a flex fare, but the seats on the other flight could be sold out by the time I need it

Probably too late, and you may have a huge number of very valid reasons for not trying this, but an agent might have been able to book both on the same PNR.
Interestingly looking at this has made me aware that EK flies MEL-KUL direct.

On a 777 though which in a 10 per row Y I will always try to avoid. However with a morning arrival which is good. The other aspect to this is that because its a 0200 departure it does not feature in a SYD-MEL-KUL fare, although you could do via an agent.
