Lord Howe Island Price! Awards are better value (if you can get'em)

Sorry to bump this up but does anyone know if there's been a change to LDH availability on points? There is the usual sparse availability up until July, and then nothing (it sends the search engine into a meltdown)

Heard here anecdotally that there are no award to LDH in the summer or the approaches.

Have looked several times and I am yet to find an award.

It's not a matter of no seats, but that this message pops up if you look for anything after mid-July

Flight Search error:

  • Qantas.com flight search error:
We are unable to find recommendations from the airlines we search. Please change your search criteria and resubmit the search. (# 66002)

Yeah apparently that's the error you get when QFF have no reward seats.

Seat availability is generally good during winter - yeh who wants to go then! There are however some seats released in the summer months at the last minute. I looked during Christmas/New Year and there was some seats available in February 2016 however the return leg was 10 days later. IMHO better chance of using the points to other destinations like Broome, Ayers Rock and Alice Springs where one way fares are still quite expensive. Good package deals for LDH are available through Oxley Travel = flight and accom.

We finally made it to Lord Howe 3 weeks ago...we spent 3 nites....it was great and relaxing so much so that we have already booked to go again next year!

Highlights include feeding the fish at Ned's beach, snorkeling with turtles at Old Settlement beach, view from Malabar Hill and Kim's lookout, stumbling on to a topless beach at Lover's Bay:):)...Negatives are expensive, relatively basic accommodation at Lord Howe, expensive restaurants, no moblile phone coverage (may be a +ve!), very slow, expensive internet (also may be a +ve as you are less inclined to look at work / personal emails). If you plan to go in summer, book airfares and accommodation as early as possible. ...
About to go to LDH for another long weekend (3 nights) in 1.5 weeks' time:p...I note that finding award flights is seemingly even more difficult now :(

I am always jealous of anyone going to LDH. It's a magical place. KPC, enjoy your weekend although 3 nights is not long enough IMHO.
