Not at all surprised with story, UK train fare can be scary! I often do St Pancras to Chesterfield; last month up 17 pounds, journey back 98 pounds! Return to AMS was 58 pound! His only penalty was going through East Midlands airport, one of my top three "worst in the world". Made for tourists and you just get the absolute classic travel moments; like the pax complaining for ten minutes why he could not take his 1 litre bottle of "rain" water through security as it was the only thing he could drink (and he did not see the signs) or the staggering number of pax who pack their passports and board passes away then have to unpack at security!!!! GRRRRR

From the quoted blog, appears to be Ryanair both ways.

And overall not surprising. Train fares are very expensive if you want flexibility or are buying at the last minute.

Agreed. But if you can book when the bookings first open on set dates you can travel often very econmically. ie My last trip to Italy 3PAX travelled for under 200 Euro combined (not each!) in total over 3 weeks mainly on the faster trains Milan-Venice-Florence-Rome- Pisa- Monterosso - Milan.

I tried to buy a train ticket from Edinburgh to Manchester at the last minute last week. The fare was going to be around 100 pounds! Flying was much cheaper, although I didn't think of going via Berlin.
