Tobacco Limits

Hi all, I've just spoken to friend of mine who smokes and would like me to bring back some fa_s/tobacco for him. In fact I did so recently and was absolutely astounded at the measly tobacco limits. 50 smokes or 50 g of tobacco! For heavens sake, that really shows the gov't in their true light.....hook 'em and bleed 'em!

So what is the best way to legally bring in tobacco? I read an old post which suggests it's OK to bring x amount in on your person and the duty free amount in as "duty free". Is this legit? I'd like to bring back as much as I can legally, but I'm not going to break the law for his addiction (and he has not asked me to do so).

The legal limit is what they describe on the website. Poor does not begin to explain it.

Personally I bring in one 1 pouch of tobacco on person and then buy another pouch duty free on arrival. They do not check and if they do check the worst that will happen after I plead ignorance is they will charge the duty on both pouches. Big deal. Personally I think it is worth the risk.

Best thing they ever did in my view. although I do enjoy a cigar or two when I visit the Central Americas

As a government you cannot argue that you tax tobacco to discourage smoking yet allow massive cartons into the country via duty free - at least their argument is congruent now.

You can bring in as much tobacco as you like, as long as you declare it and pay duty on it.

Duty is high - currently 53c per cigarette + GST. All up including the purchase of the duty free cigarettes (about $2 per packet overseas), the duty and the GST, it works out to about $16 per pack. A substantial saving of ~$10 per packet brought in over supermarket prices.

Otherwise 50 cigarettes is the limit. Which at about $2 per pack overseas saves ~$46 for the recipient.
