Tipping

They don't have the culture of tipping, so I'm not sure why they should.

We don't either, and the only people I tip are the taxi driver and pizza guy ("keep the change" style). Just because you do your job it doesn't mean you should be tipped in a non-tipping culture. IMO anyway :)

Remember as well in the UK, the scurge of the 'mandatory' 'optional' service charge of 10-12.5% is applied to many restaurant bills. No chance of a tip when they pull that stunt (even though they still fish for a tip).

I've sent many a bill back when it has that sort of charge on it. Sadly tipping is pretty much mandatory in the USA, though the amount will vary dramatically depending upon the service. If it's ****ty enough, then I have no compunction with none. In the rest of the world it's largely a disease.

I very rarely even tip the taxi driver. Why should I

Was recently in Waikiki and had dinner at Top of Waikiki revolving restaurant, lovely meal but at the end when the bill arrived, the server advised that a gratuity had not been included so they suggested we tick either 18% 24% or 28 % !!! Bit blown away by that, think we went for 15%...another restaurant there actually included the 18% in the final bill and would have taken another tip if we had not realised....would not go back there again, not sure what the wage differences are these days but believe they have improved.

I have just spent 2 weeks in Thailand. Tipped quite often although the amounts I tip are quite small. Tipping someone I will not see again does not make me feel better nor does it ensure I will get better service.

In Australia, and I would include pretty much all western nations, I do not believe in tipping. I will occassionally leave some coins if I do eat out at a restaurant and round up taxi fare to nearest dollar. No need to tip anywhere else.

I tip 20% routinely on everything in the USA. I just consider it part of the cost. Having been yelled at before for tipping poorly by a taxi driver (due to my ignorance), I find that money worth paying. I'll round up in most Aussie/NZ/UK situations.

I actually like some taxi's in California and Nevada now, the automated payment systems have a press button for 15, 20 or 25 % tip. Makes it easy to press and swipe and go.

Sooner everyone stops tipping the better.

Sooner everyone stops tipping the better.

The sooner employers pay hospitality workers fair wages the better.

I only tip for exceptional service in Australia.
I don't tip in countries with a compulsory, itemised service charge.
In some countries I tip because I know their wages are kept extremely low on the assumption that they will be routinely supplemented by tips.
In other countries - such as Thailand - I tip because I know they are paid almost nothing and a tip which costs me almost nothing can make a big difference to them.

I was told a while ago if the service is s****y in the US you should tip one cent. They then get the message that they failed rather than thinking you are a misely OB.I have done it a few times and it does seem they get the message.

I'm sure they appreciated the life lesson while struggling to pay their rent or buy food. But I think we have had this argument before...

Not likely to change.

I tip when I want to tip not when I am told I need to tip.
