Would the costs of visiting a destination impact on your decision to visit?

Next year I've got a month in NYC and shortly thereafter three weeks around Norway. I watch it getting more expensive by the day as The exchange rate goes against us. In NYC, the Marriot best rate guarantee helped somewhat. The hotel has a kitchenette which will help along with the free breakfast.

Staying in the Maldives can cost a fortune.

If you're not prepared for it, a holiday in the Maldives can make you cry.... and paying in USD is not going to help right now.

Norway is on the VA points converted to SQ for SYD-SIN-AMS and ret via ZRH from OSL. Take a loaf of bread and some Vegemite for the first week - sans mould.

The regulations for tourist hotels in the Maldives was modified a couple of years ago. If you want to stay in 5* rooms on a private atoll, you need a very large credit line. OTOH, 2* and 3* hotels now exist relatively close to the main airport. Helps if you don't get seasick while you get to some of them though

I think it's about picking the time. I'd planned a big USA road trip (6 months or so) however have put it off based on the weak dollar (and I guess the fact that I'm now in California once a fortnight for work which has lessened the appeal a bit).

A weak rand, however, has made ZA much more appealing and there are a few safari trips planned.

In either case, unless I had a huge cache of cash to draw on, I'd rather points up accommodation in either. That, of course, does restrict your options to a degree and in and of itself is not cheap either (points wise).

Where in Asia? Not all of it is much cheaper than parts of Europe, and may be just as more expensive now.

Singapore, usually a holiday haven for many Australians, has markedly increased in cost, although a complete meal with drinks for less than $10 is still a very good score, admittedly.

Agreeably, you are saving on air fare and mostly also on hotelling.

Wow, didn't realise things are so expensive in Bora Bora and the Maldives. Had a look on booking.com and some resorts are sold out at over $1K a nite. Only a few villas left at $2k.

The best hotel/suite in Oslo, Bergen, Tromsø was a fraction of the cost. In Fact our hotel cost in Norway averages around half of what we're paying in Italy and Paris ... and we're staying at the pretty nice establishments. FWIW Norway is looking pretty cheap with airfares and hotels.

Key word there is "resorts". And add in the air fare to get to the remote atoll.
Someday I'll go but it will be within boat travel distance of the MLE international airport.

Yes - cost does play a part for me.

I like to go on holiday to relax and not feel constantly ripped off for everything. That's why holidaying in Australia can be so unappealing. Going out for drinks here can be extraordinarily expensive, and measures are tiny. Compare that to drinks at Vertigo in Bangkok, or Tokyo, or Hong kong in some fabulous bars... and while the cost might be getting close to Australia on a 'per drink' basis... you'll find drinks in those places are two or three times the measure of alcohol. You can relax and enjoy. (Even Switzerland which is traditionally very expensive can still be good value for money.)

Same with food here. $30, $40, $50 for a main course. Often for some quite small serving sizes and with varying quality and service. Was at a hotel in Melbourne... a room service steak was $45, then they wanted $8 for a sauce to go with it (peppercorn etc). Another hotel - $44 for a buffet breakfast. $10 for a side bowl of vegetables in a restaurant is not uncommon in Australia.

So yeah - cost wise, Australia tourism has put itself out of the market.

Must admit I hope many do change their plans and holiday at home ... along with many foreigners deciding to come here due to low A$. Have a few bucks invested in management rights - the future looks bright
