SWMBO is going to PER soon. Would like to upgrade her to J.

She is booked Q outbound and V inbound. Are these upgradeable as Classic Upgrade Awards? if not then how does one bid for an upgrade?

And if I have the points can I request the upgrade for her or can one only use one's own points to upgrade? (in which case I guess I have to do a family transfer to her account before requesting the upgrade?)

All domestic fare classes are upgradeable. If there's space available the upgrade will be confirmed immediately, otherwise there'll be an option to waitlist for one.

And yes, you can use your points to upgrade her.

Yes you can upgrade her from your account. There's a section to "upgrade family member" where you put in the booking reference etc.

Your status will help with any priority of processing waitlists, if yours is higher than hers.

On those fare types it will be 20,000 points each way

actually V looks like it falls under "flexible economy" so 10k one way.

Is it likely to be cheaper to use bid for upgrade or even ODU than classic upgrade?

I believe that's only true for P1s.

oh it could be. I had thought if, for example, a Gold went to upgrade a Bronze, that even though the upgrade would still be processed after other P1/WP/SG and PS, it would have a sub-priority of "Gold" when it came to bronzes. It could well just be a P1 thing. if so, my apologies.

Anyway for domestic it's not so much of an issue I would have thought.

That's correct.

If you are not travelling but use your points to request an upgrade for an eligible family member, the upgrade will be awarded according to the eligible family member's priority, not the status of the Qantas Frequent Flyer whose points are being used. An exception is made when Platinum One members, though not travelling, redeem points for an upgrade on behalf of eligible family members. In this case the eligible family members will enjoy the same high priority as a Platinum One member.

I use the following table as a reference from the introduction of "simpler and fairer" of which V class was a victim.

I've never been offered bid to upgrade. There is a separate thread on the topic which seems to indicate limited success.
