Burnt all my points

You were referring to a RTW right ? So I would have had to stop off in places that didn't fit in with our plans and time constraints to conform with the rules.

As John K mentioned, you don't need to fly RTW. The OW award is a distance based award and as far I can see you meet the rules (ie 2 OW carriers other than Qantas etc). As your travel is between 20,000 and 35,000 miles, a OW award would be 280,000pts.

Ultimately, you are happy with your booking... so I say enjoy your flight! Cathay J will be great... but something to think about next time perhaps :-)

Ashleyn just a tip - my last RTW OW I booked a seperate ticket to get to Singapore and started the RTW ticket there (Europe), Brisbane then became a stop on my ticket and 6 mths later I was to resume the ticket (trip to USA) - so you can actually factor in two overseas trips in the 12mth period.

Good one, would you mind outlining the actual route of this RTW just out of interest?

Currently in the process of burning our as well. Just booked SYD-FCO in J for 2 with my wife's points and she's down to 16k now. Will be booking the return flight from CDG in F with mine which will leave me with a similar pitiful balance! :(

Assume this is CX ?

We're doing the same at the end of the year (IN-FCO .. OUT-CDG). Booked F out of CDG on the midday flight, evening flight was never released ... the kids are staying in J for this sector :D

From a practical point of view, what would be the chances of stringing together my award flights in 1 booking ? I think pretty much none given my experience of finding the flights I did as single bookings.

You can start off with a single booking and add flights as you are ready or flights become available. You pay a points penalty but it should still reduce overall points cost.

Yep CX.

Will be going for the midday flight from CDG to return as well. No F cabin on the evening flight I believe.

Get me outta here - the flights I booked were

Singapore to Helsinki - AY
Helsinki to Venice - Via Berlin on AY and AB
Venice to Zurich - via dusseldorf on AB
Paris to Brisbane - via Kuala Lumpur on MH
Brisbane to Los Angeles - QF
Los Angeles to Singapore - via Tokyo (overnight) on JL

**two of our party did to Zurich and then switched tickets and finished it off with a Zurich to Amman to Bangkok to Sydney on royal Jordanian then SYD to LA (QF) and rejoined ticket as above**

Can't you just use airport codes?

It takes too long to process all the long city names

Not the original poster, but I did something similar with the following route:

MEL-xDXB-LHR-xHKG-SIN [11 month stopover] SIN-NRT-LAX-xSYD-MEL
Total miles 34,935

I really love this idea. How much hard work is it to put the itinerary together and what happens if you are unable to continue on after the 11 month stopover? Can you reschedule those flights or is it lost?

Thanks deejo and immature, I'm going to take a good look at this way of doing it. What were the 'categories' of flights and the point requirements of both your bookings?

What was your OW F routing? How many long hauls in F did you get?

Four long hauls in F on JL, MH, BA, and QF plus 5 hours on CX. Total of about 54 hours F flying time.

QF ADL-SYD J B737-800
JL SYD-NRT F B777-300ER
CX HND-HKG-KUL F/J B747/A330-300
MH KUL-LHR F A380
BA LHR-IAD F A380
AA IAD-DFW F MD80
QF DFW-SYD-ADL F/J A380/B737-800

Just under $1700 taxes and charges. A fair bit of that goes to the British government but I want to try the LHR Concorde Room and the BA A380.

It's only 30,000 miles total.

Interesting routing.

What did you think of MH F ?
Which lounge at QF F pax use at DFW ? Anything decent ?
Did BA CCR meet your expectations ?

I am trying to find a routing which maximises F travel and also gives access to the best lounges and have so far come up with the following.

MEL-SYD-NRT QF J then JL 77W F (QF SYD F),
HND-HKG CX 774 F, HKG-LAX CX 77W F (CX Pier),
LAX-LHR BA 388 F(QF LAX F),
LHR-DOH-DXB QR 388 F then QR A321 F, (QR LHR lounge then Al-Safwa lounge)
DXB-MEL QF 388 F (EK DXB F)

With stops in Japan, LA, London, Dubai, and Bangkok.
Comes in at just under 32k miles.
Five of the best OW F products (JL, CX, BA, QR and QF)
Probably four of the best OW lounges (Al-safwa probably, QF SYD & LAX F, CX Pier) + the EK DXB lounge and highly regarded QR lounge at LHR.

I am aware that award seats are tough to get on the LHR-DOH QR leg and also the BA leg but I think for one pax it can be accomplished.

What a life.

Even though there are some fairly retrictive conditions, it is possible to reschedule flights during the itinerary.

Refer to the following quote from the Book of Rules:

14.7.6 Subject to this clause 14.7, the following changes are permitted to a Classic Flight Reward flight before departure of that flight, provided the booking contains one or more Flight Segments that are not within Australia, and the Flight Segment(s) being changed do not include a partner airline that requires a ticket to be reissued for the change. Any such change will incur a Change Fee (see the Fee Schedule) per passenger:
(a) change to flight number; and
(b) change to date of travel.

I recently had to make use of this provision, and (after the customary 30 min wait to talk to a human) I was able to bring forward our last leg of the itinerary by about 3 weeks without any fuss.

HTH,
J

How come all these F / J flts are only 30K points - why so cheap :) ?
