Selecting seats on CX with QF award.

I have just booked 2 x J QF award flights to LHR on CX. I can't seem to select our seats on MMB. I tried on the CX site but no go there either. Please could someone with experience in doing this explain how I get to select our seats.

What seats would you recommend for a couple? First flight a 330 BNE/HKG, the second a 777 HKG/LHR. I am unfamiliar with CX as we always fly QF to LHR but this time thought we'd have a change and CX is more available too.

There may be a way to find the CX PNR somewhere - but I haven't found it! Easiest way is to call CX, give them your flight details, and they will bring up the booking and give you the CX specific PNR.

You can then use this to go to the CX MMB, and select/change seats as often as you want (sometimes better ones comes up).

Best seats - for the 33G, avoid the mini cabin. If the loads are light they will close this cabin and you will be reallocated and potentially end up with seats apart.

It really depends how much you want to talk during the flight. If so the middle seats may afford a slightly better opportunity for you to do so. However I always prefer seats behind each other - either A or K. You want a seat in the middle of the cabin - not too close to the front. But further back is ok as the middle galley is not used on flights to Australia.

Having window seats allows you to control the light... nothing worse than being stuck in the middle seats if you want to snooze or watch TV and the window pax have their blinds wide open letting in light/glare.

For the 77W to London - if it is three class, you want seats in the mini cabin behind First. Again, either the centre, or two windows, one behind the other.

If there is no first class, go for the middle of the main, front cabin.

Hi there, I believe that I had the same issue with my CX flights booked as part of a QF Award - was not able to book seats on the QF website apart from aisle or window preference.

From memory, the way that I was able to choose our seats was to use www.checkmytrip.com and open the booking using the QF PNR and surname. Under the CX legs, there was a different PNR listed. I was able to use this other PNR on the CX website under Manage Booking to book our seats for the CX flights.

It did take a bit of fiddling with the booking name on the CX website though - I seem to remember that it worked with just my first name and surname in the end (ie no middle names required).

The CX MMB sometimes needs a bit oof playing around with in the name field, as you point out.

Sometimes you can just enter firstname, otheritimes is firstnameandinitial or firstnameandfullmiddlename (all without spaces)

Thanks for the reminder on checkmytrip - I think I have used that before, but it doesn't always bring up results 9guess it might depend who you book through).

In general, I would caution against selecting seats on any airline website except for the operating carrier. Using the QF website to select seats on CX for example (even if you could do it) if opening up too many risks!

Thanks for all those suggestions. In the end I managed to get in via the CX web site. Just put in my booking reference number from my QF booking and name. No problem. I have selected 12 D & !2 G for both flights but after reading your replies will now have a look at those.

12DG would be ok seats for the 777 to london if it's the mini cabin behind first class.

12DG would not be recommended for the A330 between australia and hong kong - the forward galley is very busy and you are also very close to the front bulkhead wall. The further back down the cabin, the more the sense of space and light.

Thanks for your advise about this. I will definitely move our seats on the first leg. We will be wanting to sleep as its a night flight so being near the galley is not a good idea. Really appreciate you taking the time and trouble to tell me about this.

Rows 15/16/17 all ok. For a couple, wanting to maximise sleep, I'd probably select 16K and 17K on the A330.

We are also doing a One World J award, mostly with Cathay. I had no problem selecting seats on the CX web site. We chose 14DG on the A330 and 17DG/19DG on the B777.

The CX website seemed to recognise my WP status (I could choose Row 11 on the B777), but it would not allow SWMBO (NB) to sit next to me, even though we are on the same booking!

For the A330, it's interesting that the conventional wisdom is that further back is better (within reason). Not sure I have seen that too often on this forum....

Only because the second galley is out of use (no ovens to heat meals). The mini cabin has too much foot traffic, is too close to PEY, and can be closed anyway.
