The top 10 (8 for me :) )

1. Temples of Angkor, Cambodia
2. Great Barrier Reef, Australia
3. Machu Picchu, Peru
4. Great Wall of China
5. Taj Mahal, India
6. Grand Canyon National Park, USA
7. Colosseum, Italy
8. Iguazú Falls, Brazil - Argentina
9. Alhambra, Spain
10. Aya Sofya, Turkey

Top 10 Australian places (10 for me):

1. The Great Barrier Reef (#2)
2. 12 Apostles (#12)
3. Hobart's Museum of Old & New Art (at #20, beating London's #52-ranked Tate Modern)
4. Cradle Mountain (#32)
5. Uluru (#33)
6. Kakadu National Park (#56)
7. Sydney Opera House (#57)
8. Blue Mountains National Park (#202)
9. Ningaloo Marine Park (#265)
10.Port Arthur (#416)

The cough end (1 for me):

1. Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy (#491)

2. Orheiul Vechi, Moldova (#492)

3. Musée Océanographique de Monaco (#493)

4. Oslo Opera House, Norway (#494)

5. Kolmanskop, Namibia (#495)

6. Mutrah Souq, Oman (#496)

7. Rock of Cashel, Ireland (#497)

8. Erdene Zuu Khiid, Mongolia (#498)

9. Grand Palace, Thailand (#499)

10. Independence National Historic Park, USA (#500)

I've been to more places in the global top 10 than in the Australian top 10! I'll have to do something about that. ;)

Saw the story in NoNews and thought someone would post the lists. Need to look at the full 500 to see how many ticks I have.

But with the above lists I've been to those underlined:

1. Temples of Angkor, Cambodia
2. Great Barrier Reef, Australia
3. Machu Picchu, Peru
4. Great Wall of China
5. Taj Mahal, India
6. Grand Canyon National Park, USA
7. Colosseum, Italy
8. Iguazú Falls, Brazil - Argentina
9. Alhambra, Spain
10. Aya Sofya, Turkey

And the missing ones are all on my must-do list. At least I've been to Victoria Falls.

Top 10 Australian places (10 for me):

1. The Great Barrier Reef (#2)
2. 12 Apostles (#12)
3. Hobart's Museum of Old & New Art (at #20, beating London's #52-ranked Tate Modern)
4. Cradle Mountain (#32)
5. Uluru (#33)
6. Kakadu National Park (#56)
7. Sydney Opera House (#57)
8. Blue Mountains National Park (#202)
9. Ningaloo Marine Park (#265)
10.Port Arthur (#416)

Not as certain about these - how good could MONA really be? I've been to Litchfield NP but not Kakadu. There's some amazing areas of tropical forest in north Qld that don't make the list. Not likely to go to Ningaloo ever. Lord Howe Island should be top 3. Kangaroo Island should also be up there.

The cough end (1 for me):

1. Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy (#491)

2. Orheiul Vechi, Moldova (#492)

3. Musée Océanographique de Monaco (#493)

4. Oslo Opera House, Norway (#494)

5. Kolmanskop, Namibia (#495)

6. Mutrah Souq, Oman (#496)

7. Rock of Cashel, Ireland (#497)

8. Erdene Zuu Khiid, Mongolia (#498)

9. Grand Palace, Thailand (#499)

10. Independence National Historic Park, USA (#500)

Not many there I've even heard of but they are still in the top 500.

Seems you can't get the full list without paying for it. But they have 11-20.

11. Fez Medina, Morocco
12. Twelve Apostles, Australia
13. Petra, Jordan
14. Tikal, Guatemala
15. British Museum, England
16. Sagrada Familia, Spain
17. Fiordland National Park, New Zealand
18. Santorini, Greece
19. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
20. Museum of Old and New Art, Australia

Which made me wonder how 12 Apostles could appear above Fiordland (or Norwegian fjords for that matter).

MONA making the 20th spot is an amazing accomplishment.
MONA , without doubt has put the spotlight on Hobart for quite sometime now & is certainly bringing the tourists in from quite afar!
