Obviously still chatting to the Captain at crucial stages of flight operations. I think I will avoid this airline. What are the other standards set in South America ?

Please everyone, do NOT judge "South America" by that one airline!

I grew up in Chile and there we had a saying about the Argentinians: "How do you become an instant millionaire? Buy an Argentine for what he's worth, and then sell him for what he thinks he's worth!" Another is "How does an Argentine commit suicide? - He leaps off the top of his ego." Essentially they have a very up-themselves attitude, which probably does not translate to a good basis for sound flying practices. But having said all that, the Falklands War showed they can produce very gifted pilots.

Chile's LAN airline is what I would regard as a very good airline by any standard.

Brazil's TAM I do not know.

I live in Colombia, and their Avianca I consider also to be absolutely top-notch. A friend of mine is the head of what is essentially their version of the ATSB, and he is one of the most thoroughly scrupulous and professional people I have ever met. I also know several Avianca pilots, and they take great pride in their professionalism also.
