to save others time doing the math, here's the breakdown courtesy of OMAAT

If you want to maximize your cent per mile ratio you’d want to buy the fewest number of miles in a given “range.”

The absolute best cent per mile ratio you’ll achieve is if you purchase exactly 76,000 AAdvantage miles. That’s because you’d be eligible for both the 15% discount and 27,500 mile bonus. If you purchase 76,000 miles then you’d earn a total of 103,500 AAdvantage miles at a cost of $2,078.63 including all taxes and processing charges. That’s a rate of ~2.0 cents per mile (USD)

To compare this promotion to recent ones that AAdvantage offered:

In early June 2015 AAdvantage sold miles for as little as ~2.06 cents each
In early May 2015 AAdvantage sold miles for as little as ~2.09 cents each
In April 2015 AAdvantage sold miles for as little as ~2.0 cents each
In February 2015 AAdvantage sold miles for as little as ~2.07 cents each
In January 2015 AAdvantage sold miles for as little as ~2.14 cents each
In November/December 2014 AAdvantage sold miles for as little as ~2.06 cents each

It looks pretty good to me! Shame about the A$ though...

Even so with enough miles its still half price J return across the pacific pond, well if one can find award seats that is :).

I would take a $1000 return fare to USA in Y. Yes, it's Y and I know it will be 30+ hours round trip of pain as a nobody status flyer - but the $6000 we would save between a couple - would justify sucking it up. Oh and then we'd save time searching for awards which don't even exist too.

Well yes if you not smitten with J or above, I am, if not wouldn't bother.

Sounds good but the AUD is so low and getting lower.

Should have bought more when it was better than parity.

So for the experts, is this a good deal?

Ah yes, well I did buy quite a few across my family when US were doing it share promos at 1.1c US and close to parity. Plenty of naysayers (here and on FT) that there would be a massive develuation when the merger occurred but I have to say Im really glad I did now when I still have a serious pool of miles bought cheap and a devaluing dollar (or I could have left the money in the bank witha taxable 3% interest).

Also bought plenty when the AUD was high and so far I find more improvements then devaluations in the programme.

Very happy I could give the latest promos a miss considering our low dollar.

Thanks coolkid101

I've converted the (approximate) US cents costs as quoted into Australian cents, using the FX from XE.com on the 17th of most months: (arbitrary mid month date)

Cost.JPG

So in the past 6 months, the cost /point hasn't shifted too badly if OMATA's figures are correct.

i remember the max. in a past offer being 100k + 60k(?) bonus - has there been anything greater from a pure max number miles perspective (post merger)?

(given you can only buy up to 100k(?) in a year, i'm interested in max miles rather than cpm)

thanks!

I'm still not sure if I'll buy some of these.

These would be processed by AA US (so a foreign transaction) rather than AA in Australia, right? If I do grab some, I want to make sure I use the right card for more points :)

The payment is in USD (thus foreign transaction fee), so yes, it's considered foreign transaction.

Whichever way one looks at it, award flights can be found then J is half price anyway.

Can i make a suggestion for those that want cheaper AA points

$99 - American Express David Jones (Black) card.

30,000 MR = 15,000 SPG = 15,000 AA

At the moment SPG have a 20% bonus on AA transfers so 20,000 SPG gets you 30,000AA.

If you have a few family members it can add up.
