I'm in the early stages of planning a trip to USA (& Cabo) next year. It's a family trip and everyone will, most likely, be travelling in Y. I thought I might shout my sibling, and myself of course, the trip over in business using my points. I am aware how hard it is to get direct flights to LA and accept that we may have to have a stop or 2.

Assuming the planets are aligned (but that the direct flights on QF have already been snaffled up), and you have the below points to travel on, I am interested to know how you would use them to get MEL-LAX? I don't mind shortish flights in non flat seats, but want the longer flights with flat beds.

QF pts - 420,000
Lifemiles - 220,000
Velocity (or converted to KF) 300,000

Would like to use up my Lifemiles, because of the continuing booking problems. QF points are the easiest for me to replenish, and my VA (KF) points are the most valuable to me and hardest to earn. I have SQ suites on my bucket list, but only want to use them if the flight is longer than say 9 hours.

I prefer to start in MEL, but am happy to start elsewhere if the service & aircraft are highly recommended.

Any suggestions to get me started would be greatly appreciated.

If you wanna go all out, then

MEL-SIN-NRT-LAX in SQ suites, that's 120,000 KF person + $700 in taxes per person

JFK-DXB-BKK on EK F that's 227,000 QF points + $1500 in taxes per person

suck it up on 2nd tier F and fly BKK-SYD on TG using LM, that's 60,000 points + $50 in taxes per person

SYD-MEL make your own way.

I will be a very very similar route starting in 12 days time ;) SYD-SIN-NRT-LAX SQ R, JFK-DXB-BKK EK F, BKK-SYD TG F ;)

Hope this gives you some ideas.....
