An interesting promotion that may suit if you go to cinema.

We're excited to announce the launch of Qantas Movies - the new way to boost your Qantas Points balance by purchasing movie vouchers[SUP]*[/SUP].

Whether you're into rom-coms or adventure, indie or action, sit back and enjoy earning two Qantas Points per $1 spent on great value movie vouchers[SUP]*[/SUP]. Hit the flicks frequently and the points will add up in no time. You can even buy vouchers and have them sent to someone else as a gift.

With the correct credit card you might even get extra points. :)

I'm curious as to how much QF Points are selling the vouchers for. Considering I'm already paying with a points earning CC this could be a nice little bonus of 11 points if they match the Telstra prices, otherwise it's almost pointless.

I did a sample transaction and it looked like $15 for an event cinema ticket so its the normal price i think it just you can buy them through QF now.

So the telstra thing is still cheaper. And you can get them from BUPA (or other health funds) for $11

$15 for adult event cinemas
$13 for child event cinemas
Minimum 4 tickets

My sample transaction says i would have got 120 points from 4 adult tickets.

Here is a link if anyone is interested

Must depend on the cinema as I did a dummy order and was quoted $11 here in Radelaide.

I think this would work if you are intending to go to the movies after 5pm Saturdays (for event cinemas). Currently the Telstra tickets doesn't apply.

It doesnt work for all cinemas after 5pm on a Saturday. I think I read that Hoyts don't do it.

I looked for at my local cinema - charging $15. I went last week to the movies, it cost me $20 as I dont use any other discount prividers. I'll be buying 4 as a test run. I'm interested in seeing whether they are blazoned with QF marketing on them as we often give movie tickets as gifts. I reckon I can go 4 times in 5 months to make it work. Plus I'll be using my 1.5pt AMEX to pay.

Can someone please explain how Qantas profit from an offer like this? Do they get a cut of every ticket sold?

More information on you (generically speaking) for their 'loyalty' database, to be marketed to third parties wishing to sell to you via Qantas, for a fee. The cinemas presumably buy the points from Qantas.

Ker-ching.

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

I quite like that I as SG received my offer 23 minutes before MrP who is WP. Its the small things. And clearly Qantas KWIA. ;)

Thanks. So it's data mining - more or less

To the point that I bought movies tickets for a particular cinema? If they look at my address they'd know that cinema is in my local area. If I use my credit card to buy my tickets direct from the cinema, someone knows I've been to that cinema. Unless you only shop with cash, people know where you've been.

And if QF want to offer me some points for something I'll actually use - woo hoo! I can't fly at the moment, and won't be able to for a few months.

That comment is a little short sighted.

Data modellers can work out sophisticated buying and spending patterns using techniques such as logistic regression, etc.

Sure, but it only works if I actually buy.

On the other hand, if it's something that I regularly buy, but this time I'm purchasing at a discounted price with a bonus (points), let them model all they want. It's not like I'm not receiving any benefit from the interaction.
