My question is can you earn Qantas Status credits and frequent flyer points using Qantas frequent flyer points plus pay from BNE to MEL?

For (say) June 19, you could either pay $199 for a Red e-Deal, or 25,000 points. In J, 124,300 points or $959.

General consensus would appear to be that it doesn't usually make financial sense from a non-canine perspective, particularly when compared with the cost of buying a non-points/SCs-earning award outright.

Points + pay are very poor value for your QFF points. If you have lots of points, no money and need the status credits things might be different, however.

The answer is here: https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/flying/using-points-awards-upgrades#points-plus-pay-flights

And you'll earn Qantas Points and Status Credits on eligible flights^.

As others have noted attaining decent value from points plus pay is difficult, but not impossible.

There is little value in points plus pay for premium cabins, business/first, as you get the benefits of status when flying in those cabins. Good value can be obtained for the cheapest of cheap flights. Check and compare options carefully.

Relative to award flights, perhaps (not hard to come up with an example of Points + Pay being cheaper than a Y award when there's a sale on).

But the value of points is essentially fixed. If you can get it cheaply with Points + Pay, you can get it cheaply with cash.

Comes back to whether someone has more cash or more points. Also it is very dependent on each particular flight or set of flights. Have had an example of the award being the preferred option, to save cash, and points plus of being cheaper than classic award. Check all options.

Yes, you earn points and status credits for tickets paid for with "points+pay". They are normal seats paid for in part with points instead of cash.

What's the earn rate though? At the paid upgrade (Business) rate or discount economy? I can't see anywhere on the Qantas site that clarifies this. It just states points and credits will be earned.

Not sure what you mean by paid upgrade rate. But the general rule is you earn according to the booked fare. Points upgrades earn at the booked fare not the upgrade fare, regardless of the payment method for the original fare.

Points + Pay gets a normal fare, rather then a wholly points paid award ticket, with some part of the cash fare converted into points. It is treated just like any fully cash paid ticket.
I just used points + pay to get a CBR-LAX return. It's booked in B to SYD and R to LAX. If my upgrade clears, the R seats will be converted to I or U(?), but I will still get the points/SC applicable to R earn rates.
