Just looking at the airfares - $248 one-way on QF for Oct.

Do fares to WLG vary?

Is there a way of finding out previous fare prices / sales to know?

Fares do vary. Usually around $300 one-way for QF though sales do come and go. The lowest I've seen it lately was $199. $248 is a good price, though October is not a peak travel time so my bet is that another sale will come along. Though at most the fare would be the same price - or $10-40 cheaper in any future sale.

MEL-WLG $169 on Air NZ in Oct. 189 with bag.

Prices vary but that's pretty decent.

Funnily enough the ad came up on top of this thread

You'll find the best fare within 24 hours of booking the previous best fare. :)

If you don't mind flying Jetstar, $99 is a pretty common sale fare for this route

Even at that price, not sure if I could tolerate the redeye flight there and 4ish morning call for the flight back...

If booking the WLG-MEL return do it separately from the MEL-WLG, unless starting from NZ. Fares are cheaper than the same Australia based fare and no CC charge.
QF sales are around every second week, so next week I assume.
