Hi all,
In August I'll be flying down to MEL (from SYD) to start a 3 week holiday in North America and I'm curious to know, should I blow the 5000 points to upgrade from Y to J? It'll be a A330-200 (assuming it's not downsized to a 737 like last time I flew late with QF) the flight is QF497 (2205 departure).

So my questions are:
1) is the domestic J lounge well stocked with goodies that late at night or would it be winding down? Could I get a proper dinner? I'd probably aim at getting there 1.5hrs before the flight so that would be around 8:30pm.
2) any chance it'll be a refurbished A330?

It's possibly not the best use of 5K but it's the start of a holiday I'm greatly looking forward to so.

One word: Yes.

Not much hope of a decent dinner in business lounge at 8:30pm unless there are leftovers from ~7:00pm.

It's only 5,000 QFF points.

For 5K its worth it for sure. Business tags on your checked baggage could be a bonus as well. (possibly)

Thanks for the replies. I suspect they'd remove the priority tags from my bags before my MEL-LAX flight the following morning?

I probably will. Do any of the A332s have the new J seats? And does the new layout run on the SYD-Mel route? (especially at 10pm).

Personally I wouldn't, although it is only 5k, I would much rather keep it towards an International Upgrade on a longer route, still dom J is great, but at 10pm you will likely only get a refreshment/supper food service anyway. Good luck with the decision :)

i agree, unless your points earn is in the 100k+ per year this is not pocket change for what is a pretty short experience
