I am totally new to this site so apologies if my questions is pointless

I need to travel from ADL to Auckland 18th May, returning 21st May and want to work out the best way to get Status points at good value for the 4's spent.

Currnetly Silver on QF

How much do you want to spend?

What time do you have available to travel? Departing ADL for same day arrival most of the Qantas options involve arriving in AKL late at night. Depart the day before, night in SYD then makes an emirates flight at 7:50am viable. That flight has cheap-ish business fares. There is also a LAN flight at about 9:30am. Again cheapish business airfares should be possible.

If you fly from Adelaide to Sydney or Melbourne you could pick up a first class seat on an Emirates A380 to and from Auckland.
Enjoy a shower en route! But save time to enjoy a drink in the upper deck bar too.

The early EK departure time does require flying to sydney/melbourne the day before. We're not sure if that is an option, yet.

But is that the best bang for your buck?

I see QF have a J special for $598 SYD/MEL to AKL and you receive 80SC. What's the Emirates flight worth and how many SC do you receive ?

I'm certain first isn't the best bang for buck, especially with that special on offer, but it would be more fun!

Especially as the QF flight would be on a 737. Barely business.

How do you know if a flight is J class? I am an absolute novice at this. happy to spend 2k'ish return

How do I find out SC on Emirates flights? There is an Emirates special ending today for $1200 return Business class but not sure if I will get full benefit of SC for this?

Just use the QF FF points calculator.
As long as you book on the flight using the codeshare QF flight number, you earn as if it was a QF flight.

Booking the trip as two one ways is often most cost effective.

Recently on sale at approx $NZ950 AKL-MEL on the EK flight in F. (Ensure you book with a QF flight number) Worth 120SC.

Just saying it again. For max SC you need to book a QF flight number so this sale may not be good value.

To ensure QF flight Number do i do this through Qantas or Emirates website (.......showing my novice level here, my apologies)

Definitely through the QF website.
But even there - check the flight numbers carefully!
Even the QF site will offer to book you on QF and EK flight numbers on the same flights.

Under the current sale there's a sweet-ish deal MEL-(SYD)-CHC in J return. $900 AUD e/w ($1752 r/t just priced) or so for 240 SC. EK codeshare is included though mostly route on Jetconnect

ex-ADL qf.com doesn't want to play ball.. the "SALE" fare they have is rather amusing $2200 each way and involves odd reroutes via PER (eg: ADL-PER-SYD-CHC/CHC-SYD-PER-ADL) odd but the "Saver" fare sees under $2000 for still 240SC though that surprises me a bit. I would have thought ADL-SYD would get another 20SC but anyway.

Get onto QF reservations, and ask them to price a one way F on EK (with a QF code) for you, SYD to AKL/AKL to SYD on EK F is about Aud$1200 it shows online, but you need it to link to the ADL to SYD/ADL to MEL flights, the linking online sometimes does not work, so phoning up QF reservations is the best bet.
ADL to SYD in what ever class you can afford, F one the departure from the east coast to AKL (7.50am as mentioned by Medhead), meaning a stop over in SYD one night, maybe a stop over in MEL if you want to, on the way back.
J on it is doable, all online booking, all the way from ADL to SYD/MEL to AKL, I have done J from ADL to SYD to CHC, and then CHC to SYD (wide bodied 777) then to ADL. Have also done J ADL to SYD to WLG, and then WLG to MEL to ADL.
EDIT Do not at all, book on the EK website, no matter how cheap in F/J/C/D or what ever class.
Book on the QF website, if you do want to earn SC.
If you book the flight on EK website, you loose SCs.
Both QF and EK have J, but believe you me, book on the QF website in J if you want to use EK.
