Not sure if you mean to get started on AFF or get started in the serious airline points/miles/status game
If the former, I'd recommend pouring yourself a nice glass of wine and devoting an hour or so to the 'Ask the Pilot' thread. Brilliant and informative. Trip reports are fun and can seriously help planning if you find a report on a destination or flight (especially long haul) that you might be making.
Else, just choose the airline / credit card / hotel thread of your major choice and browse around. Many of the threads get diverted, 'off topic' and are regularly contradictory, so a browse is the best initial strategy. You'll get a feel for how the discussion goes, who might be more informative on a particular topic than others etc. A bit hard to get definitive answers early on without a bit of filtering.
A good number of abbreviations are explained here.
Hey mate, I just joined recently and have already gotten two or three pieces of advice which really made things easier. I have found so far that the best policy is "don't be afraid to ask". There is apparently always someone or multiple someones here more than happy to help you out - and they know what they are talking about.
