Carry-on required to be stored under seat in front not overhead

Just flew Cityflyer SYDMEL on a 738. At boarding, the agents had some specially printed red luggage labels with them that stated something like "This item must be stored underneath the seat in front of you.", and by implication, not in the overhead lockers. Perhaps I've missed them previously, but this was the first time I've noticed this. I didn't get to see them using these tags for any pax's items, so am wondering what is behind this?, and what kind of item are they trying to exclude from the overhead lockers? Has this been a regular part of domestic boarding procedure for any length of time?

Never seen that either, but could be if someone has two carry on bags, they want the smaller one under the seat in front rather than taking up extra overhead space (as per the announcement).

This started happening early December on 737 flights. If you have 2 bags, the smaller one should go under the seat. The idea is that if the bag has a tag, it shouldn't be overhead. BA have done this for a while too.

I think the problem is someone can pull the tag off between the gate and the plane - would work better putting the tag on the overhead bag.

Has been happening for a while, people seem to be following it on the business hour flights.

I guess as most business fly QF and on the golden triangle used to get the 767 more often than not, overhead storage wasn't so much of an issue. Now with a majority of flights 737 they have to adapt! Thankfully more a330s are popping up on the triangle on my flight times / much prefer widebodies

Agree re the wide bodies I dislike the 737 with its limited overhead and cramped seating in Y. Would be good to see more wide bodies on the triangle.

IMHO I see the 737 as an aircraft more indicative of and suited to LCC than full service. I personally much prefer An A320 over the 737 with its wider cabin. Single Aisle aircraft are always going to provide issues, IMO with regards to carry on until airlines start enforcing appropriate carry on limits and forcing people to check in luggage.

The cramped seating in J is not much better!

It's been around for a few months. I wish they would also introduce 'your bags are too big to fit in overhead locker' tags too!

Even with the tags, there is always some fool that lies his laptop satchel down in the overhead bin.

Or tags that say " This item is clearly too big and probably too heavy for cabin baggage so we will check this in for you "

We have that with Premium hand luggage" on the Dash 8s - tagged and left/collected at the foot of the stairs. Beats fully checked in luggage.

Sure does. I'm disgusted how some baggage handlers treat other people's bags, hence I try to just take carry on whenever possible. Mind you the premium hand luggage seems a bit of a lottery. Sometimes it's tagged but mostly not.

I believe laptop satchels are fine in the overhead, provided the fools don't do that. The number of clowns who do lay them down is astounding.

The space limitation is really the large items not the little items that can be fit into space around the large items, with some thought. I also maintain that a laptop bag cannot fit under the space in front of 4C/D on a 737.

I always put a laptop bag under the small aisle space in 4C/D. Fits snugly, but it works!

Looks like I'll get to try soon. Personally I don't think my bag with fit. But let me reserve judgement until I test it.

Stand it up and angle it so that the bottom is angled out towards the aisle, with the top wedged up against the top of the seat leg. Should fit.

SYD - BNE and vv has lost a lot of the wide bodied planes that used to do the run, ie, the old now dead 767s. Though, at least some of the SYD - MEL and vv still have the 330, but a lot of it is now also the 737.
Who knows, touch wood, maybe one day they (QF) might put more 330 into the Australian eastern states triangular capital city run.
Everytime I look at booking, I can't find a 330 that does the SYD - BNE run, only 737 now, and yes, I know the reason/excuse as been provided on here, that the 330 takes too long to do the turn around between unloading and loading having to need to use the hold huge aluminium boxes, where as the 737 just needs a man to crawl in and move bags out.
Edit:
Does everyone remember the chutes that supposed to be/used to be able to pass extra huge/extra large items to the base level where the trolleys are? Were those chutes ever actually used.
This was before my time ala 1997.
Don't think VA's (AN's old terminal) still has them, but I SYD/MEL still has them, with their lonely red light but not used anymore these days.
They are about chest level, between the seats at the departure gates.
Imagine if those were used, maybe people would learn to not bring along their worldly possessions onto a plane.
Why have so huge a pull along that you have to get a male passenger to help you load this mammoth thing? I had to do it once a few weeks ago, the FA were far away, the girl had her hand in a sling of all things! This was that 330 wide body I took PER to SYD Christmas Day.

Jump into 4A/F and you'll be fine.

Those seats are great for underseat space.

Unfortunately, window seats are not the best for me, extremely unco. And I feel bad asking people to move to let me out.

Good idea.

At least now I have a chance of putting my laptop bag in the overhead. Should really take some things out of it as it is too big to fit in small space in front of row 4 aisle.

My laptop bag is bulky and has bulges everywhere and I can just about squeeze it into the small aisle space. If I clean up some of the rubbish in there it will fit snugly.
