What were the FA's doing hanging out at the back of a 747?

Other than that... while disconcerting, you'd need a cherry picker to scrawl that, so I'd assume it was maintenance trying to be funny.
 
I'm seriously in two minds about this...

On the one hand, as a passenger I'd be seriously cheesed off at the delays if I had urgent business or limited time in HKG.

While on the other, having had quite a bit of air time with 'experienced' UA crews (and met quite a few in a social setting), I tend to trust their instincts. They have always struck me as being professional in terms of safety, and I don't think they would take a decision regarding this lightly.

Agree, I see it a bit as damned if they do, damned if they don't. We hate anything that interferes with us getting there in time but if anything went wrong we'd start saying safety should be the priority.
