My thoughts go out to all employees affected! :(

Dear valued passengers, suppliers, staff, key stakeholder and friends of Skytrans,Skytrans Pty Ltd, the Cairns based, family owned and commercially operated airline which celebrated its 25th year of serving the people and communities of North Queensland, carried its last passenger this afternoon, Friday 2nd January 2015.
Skytrans Pty Ltd has made the decision to cease trading, effective immediately. As the Managing Director, I will seek legal and financial advice over the next few days regarding options for the business moving forward, but to be clear, it does not include the recommencement of flights in the short to medium term.
As Managing Director I have a lawful responsibility to notify regulators and other significant stakeholders when there are key impacts on the business. This has been one of those times.
This is not only a sad day for the business, but more importantly for our staff and indeed the passengers and communities of North Queensland. Yesterday, the 1st of January 2015 marked our 25th anniversary of serving the people of Queensland, particularly outback and regional Queensland, the Gulf country and Cape York.
Today there is no celebration, beyond the pride everyone in Skytrans shares in having delivered a safe reliable passenger and freight service to communities as diverse as Birdsville and Boulia, Bamaga and Brisbane. We will miss them all, for they have all been relationships built over a lifetime of trust and mutual support, collaboration and shared endeavour, and good old fashioned friendships forged easily between good people.

Very much hope that many of them are picked up by Rex during the ramp up of their operations for the services they won the tender in place of Skytrans, indeed Rex stated in their press release that they are "..committed to keeping/hiring as many of the staff and agents as we can. ..."

Re: Skytrans Ceases Operating

Very sad indeed.

Re: Skytrans Ceases Operating

Just read this, sad news.

The state opposition later laid the blame for Skytrans’ demise squarely at the feet of the Queensland government.

“It was the LNP [Liberal National Party] who gave a NSW airline the contracts previously held by Skytrans for regional Queensland air routes,” Labor’s Bill Byrne said.

The loss of 200 jobs within the far north Queensland economy was an indictment on the LNP’s promise to boost regional growth and create jobs, he said.

While I appreciate a tender process is essentially a competition and needs to be fair, it does seem the QLD government should have been looking out for QLD jobs/businesses :p

Sad I never got to fly them.

Mm I don't think the QLD govt understands this very well. Remember when virgin were going to move their HQ to Sydney for the same reason...

The thing is the replacement carrier will still have to employ people to operate the aircraft and do ground handling. Also, perhaps why the incumbent was successful is that (they claim) to have expanded the tender routes they already operate beyond just the minimum requirement of the tender, which has benefits for the economy as well.

The replacement carrier uses the contractor Oceania in BNE so ex Skytrans employees would have to work for them. Not sure what the plan will be in CNS.

You really have to question the suitability of using a Saab340 (which aren't equipped with apu's) to remote QLD outback towns.

There will be some QLD towns that don't have a ground power unit which means pilots will have to either do a battery start or leave one engine running on turnaround which IMHO is an accident waiting to happen.
