SPG are currently offering a promo where you buy 20k spg points which allows you to transfer 1:1 to Asia miles. Also they give another 5k points when you transfer 20k spg points to an airline program.

This equates to 2.1 cents per mile (ie usd$525 for 25k Asia miles)

Do you reckon this is good value to buy?

Just to be clear its a (up to) 25% off promo, and given you can only do it once per calendar year and its December is a good promo, even if you transfer it to AA, thats close to a OW J flight to Asia.

• Get 10% off 500–9,500 Starpoints
• Get 15% off 10,000–14,500 Starpoints
• Get 20% off 15,000–19,500 Starpoints
• Get 25% off 20,000 Starpoints

I would transfer SPG to AAdvantage rather than Asiamiles. Also you can buy more miles if you have more than one account (family members etc) registered at the same address and then transfer the points over. The new account will still need to be open for 14 days before you can get the bonus miles

Depends on what you want to redeem for. Personally, I think the best value is use SPG and transfer to JAL mileage bank. Their redemption rate is ridiculously low. Roundtrip SYD-NRT is 60000 on business and 80000 on first class. I can't find any other program that can beat that.

I guess they are good value if you need the miles to go somewhere.

I believe you can buy miles with the current AAdvantage promotion at ~2.02 cents/mile which is better than this promotion of 2.1 cents/mile.

Thanks for the advice. I'm holding around 45-50k miles which I'm looking to redeem a CX F ticket HKG-HND which requires 70,000 miles. This promo would work just right for me!

Any fuel surcharges on that? Also would I be able to add a domestic QF MEL-SYD tag and back for the same number of miles?

Unfortunately yes. But less than Asia Miles. Asia miles charged me HKD$5500, which is ~$830 AUD. JAL charges ¥56000, which is only ~$560.

I haven't looked into whether they allow you to add QF MEL-SYD. My guess would be no. Many of the Asian airlines (incl SQ, CX and MH) have a separate award chart for their own metal but doesn't allow you to mix and match with partners. (CX allow you to mix one partner with CX flight, but they add each sector as the total distance travelled)
