Yes, I'm a bit weird. I don't like the A380, mostly because the wall is too far from the window seat for me to wedge a cushion and sleep. I'm off to the US again in January, and am looking for flights on Qantas there and back which are Jumbos, not A380.

So-far, looking at the Qantas site booking system (which seems to have improved), I can only find QF101, which is MEL-LAX. So-far can't find a return flight. Anyone know offhand which flights are Jumbos? Via Brissie is fine, I did that 2 trips back (I'm in CBR). Although getting the Qantas booking system to co-operate is sometimes frustrating, it seems to hide flight options.

Pleased they are no longer offering United for the domestic leg in the US. And pleased that the economy fares they're showing on the QF site are upgradeable (I have a lot of points, might as well start using them).

Ah! So I just have to convince the QF booking thing to show me those ones. I've been putting CBR - SLC into the flight search thing at QF, and it fills in the gaps, as it were. I wonder if it's possible to insert a leg? CBR - BNE - SLC

Use multi city, it won't put you at a disadvantage price wise in my experience.

When in January?

QF is changing its pacific flights from late January. There are limited flights ex MEL over xmas/new year as QF100/101, then in late January, QF95/96 (MEL), QF17/18 (SYD) and QF15/16 (BNE) are 744 flights (+ the QF11/12/93/94 388 flights)

Probably late January, seems the Xmas rip-off ends around jan 16th, so that's when I'm eyeing the dates from. (got to do some ski training and meet folk in Utah).
when I was doing my cursory test search, QF101 came up actually, it was the only jumbo on that first search.

Erm, does 744 mean a jumbo?! (I thought they were 747s, so I'm learning some new names here).

Really not a fan of the Big Planes (A380) and in fact am not quite sure what all the fuss is about. It would be rather exciting to get on one of the brand-new 747s, some of the old ones are almost as old as me.

Excellent. I'm just thinking what a fool I am to have not used this option previously, it's a pretty narrow old itinerary now they don't use SFO any more, so adding BNE wouldn't change anything else much.

....the Xmas rip-off ends ......

If you think that seasonal supply/demand variations in pricings are ¨rip-offs¨ you will never get to enjoy travel.

International airfares have reduced in real cost year after year after year. We travellers are truly blessed :)

I had to fly right before Xmas after S-11 as our visas were understandably held up, paid the horrible premium for doing so, and the plane was practically empty!

Well, the multi-city thing on the Qantas site doesn't work so well. It won't let you put all the legs in for the same date, but that's exactly what happens when you fly from here to there. Put in the LAX-SLC leg as the next day, and it dutifully went off and found a flight for the next day. So I'm back to using the simple flight-finder.

Why does the Qantas tool put such tight connection times? It's quite annoying. Last trip, I landed in Sydney and they were already paging me at the domestic terminal to hurry up and get on the bus. awful. It's like if they know you're a Club member, they want to prevent you using the lounges!

Between that comment and the ¨christmas rip-offs¨paranoia, I think that a psychiatrist could improve your travel enjoyment :)

Yes, 744 is an abbreviation for 747-400. The 747-800 would be abbreviated to 748.

Given that Boeings are numbered along the lines of 7x7-abc you can use the same method for all the Boeings e.g. 737-400 = 734. The 737-800 = 738 and so on.

You may also notice that 747-438 comes up. The 38 is Qantas' customer code, which is a number that Boeing has issued to QF. So this example is a 747 series 400 that Qantas ordered (customer number 38).

Hths.

Thank you for the amateur psychology, I take it you were feeling bored? Here's some health info for you: you don't normally get referred to a psychiatrist before first seeing a psychologist, so that'd be the starting point. If a few throw-away comments were a trigger for needing such help. Which they're normally not.
