I've had a long record of overseas air ticket purchases being rejected by Amex - AA, CX, BA, SA you name it! I had got to the stage of calling Amex before making an overseas purchase in order to avoid the inevitable ping on the mobile telling me to call them after the transaction was rejected. Tonight I forgot to call them when paying for a BA fare. Instead I got a ping with a safekey code which I entered and the transaction went through. The key also arrived by email a minute or two later. Customer satisfaction improved! Is this new in Australia? I don't know as I haven't had an airline transaction for a couple of months.

Safekey is being migrated from a static password (not sure it is in use in Australia) to sms notification.

Here's the blurb I received as a UK safekey user.

New and improved SafeKey from American Express® – a simple, highly secure way to shop online from 15 October.

As a previous user of SafeKey, you know how it can help protect you from online fraud, and offer peace of mind when making online purchases on your American Express Card.

So we're pleased to tell you that from 15 October 2014, SafeKey will be even more secure with the introduction of dynamic one-time codes replacing your existing SafeKey password.

These codes will be sent to you via email or text as you check-out, to verify your online transactions. So you can rest assured that the only person using your Card online is you.

AirAsia but only when booking on their Malaysian Site in Malysian Currency. Other currencies/sites with AirAsia worked without. Safekey was with SMS code (also sent email). Worked a treat.

I have some BA transactions from 1 Sep 2014 that were Safekey authorised, so it must've started a little while ago.

Wow completely different experience with me.

I always have a hard time trying to put foreign transactions through on my Citi Visa but on my Amex, I use it all over the world (both offline and online) and nothing ever happens, whether its a $3 Starbucks at Singapore or 4000 GBP in London. I was thinking how 'insecure' it was, given that they've not questioned a single transaction I charged on the card.
