The 80K offer has been there a long while now. They just keep extending the date.

I can see why - It's a dud offer.

Dud may be a bit harsh, as the 80K tips the scales:

* 80K = 80% of a return flight to Europe in J on MH or 50% in J on SQ.

* Free Reserve Card which has a free flight worth $400-600

* $200 travel credit

* Free Virgin and other lounge access = handy to some

If I did not have a healthy points balance I would consider buying and cancelling before the year is up. Not worth keeping though without the 80K.
.

Far from dud when they will also refund portion of annual fee on pro-rata basis. I cancelled my Cent Card early April - have to wait til early Nov before re-applying but will certainly be doing so to take advantage of this offer.

AMEX have treated their customers very badly in recent years IMHO - I feel the really deserve to be used and abused.

Dud compared to the Investec 100K for $400.

If Amex hadn't rooted the CBR payout I'd be thinking along different lines.

Maybe so - maybe not.

1. Will Investec give you your 400 clams back on pro rata basis if you cancel?

2. Investec are QFFpts - to me 80K KFF pts far more valuable than 100K QFF pts - plus a free flt on reserve card - again wouldn't do for us to all like the same girl huh?

Wouldn,t it be nice if all these credit card companies offered some bonuses for existing customers instead of trying to get new customers & p!!!!!g off long time card holders. I pay the same annual rate as a new customer but they don,t give me anything. If you say you want to cancel ,they say you can ,and then you can reapply to get these new benefits.I suppose their marketing departments would say look how many new clients we have ,but how many did we lose. A lot of people I know take up the fee free offer & LOTS OF POINTS, & once they get the points they cancel. Doesn,t seem like good marketing to me.So to
all credit card companies LOOK AFTER YOUR EXISTING CUSTOMERS because we are the ones who have been loyal to . Written by a AMEX CARDHOLDER since 1977. By the way try to contact the marketing by phone ,it,s easier to get to the POPE

I have had this card for the past 11 months and it has been worthwhile.

For the $1200 (which my girfriend paid), we got the 80,000 points which actually turned into 92,000 points when they had a 15% bonus to transfer to Qantas, which allowed my girfriend to also book a 140K OneWorld award for our 6 month around the world trip.

I then got Marco Polo Gold which was very useful when travelling on the RTW ticket, plus internal South American flights on LAN, flights in the US on AA and in China/HK on Dragonair. In particular the extra luggage privledges (not on Qantas) on AA, BA and Cathay were well utilised. We also got Priority Pass membership which was used on a number of the flights we took on discount airlines (the lounge at Gatwick in particular was very good). Amex Centurian Lounge in Buenos Airies was one of the best lounges of the trip. Accor Platinum got us some excellent deals for accommodation plus upgrades pretty much everywhere we went and sometimes an Executive lounge and most importantly early checkin and late check out which helped when we arrived at the hotel at 7am after an overnight flight. IHG Gold or whatever it was also was used a few times as well.

Since coming back we have booked to fly Sydney to Queenstown early next year, one flight on the freebie from the Reserve card and then used the $200 credit for the other flight which means the two of us are flying return to NZ for $164. I also booked the Pullman in Sydney our free night in November.

So all in all, it has worked out very well for us this year, but I can't see the value in paying $1200 per year going forward.
