Comped due to the "three year average" rule, for not reaching the retain SC threshold..

When do you get notified? Is it prior to the last day of your membership year? If so, how many days (roughly)?

My only comp was 2011. The two years prior + 1 year of no flying = 5,620 SC ..... didn't get notification until a few weeks after my end year date.

There's hope for me yet. I was comped 3 years in a row when I didn't need it. This year will be a bit of a struggle, thanks to the "simpler and fairer" regime.

You might want to check this out with 747800intercon, but the "three-year rule" will be gone soon, albeit supposedly with room for discretion if the computers happen to send the right signal to the person with said discretion.

Soft landings to go next.

Makes sense - only a matter of time.

That is a huge bombshell.

Gun. Foot. Shoot....

You can say that again... Soft landings are great - losing that is a huge blow if it's true. It just means people will move to another program a helluva lot faster.

Let's hope it's merely a vicious rumour.

I have just checked Master FM's account. He has a 31 August date and was sitting on 215 status credits (currently silver) with no further travel booked. His date has changed to 31 Aug 2015 so I assume he has been comped Silver. I think he probably would have averaged Silver for the last 3 years as he was close to 600 status credit last year. Pity if the soft landing is going as that was a nice feature. I doubt if Mr FM and I will need it though as we are probably going to be platinum until we get LTG unless something changes in flying patterns.

Just as a data point - I should have been booted down from QF Silver to Bronze on the 31st May (had no future bookings at the time), but I got comped and retained silver, notified about 2-3 weeks before status reassesment. Not sure about when the new Silver card got mailed out but it was mid-late May from memory. Not sure if it makes a difference, but I had purchased a 2yr Qantas Club membership that will expire in Oct 2015.

I have a feeling this is not going to be a rumour.

The majority of recent decisions make no sense and are the result of someone realising they are in trouble but instead of rationally thinking through any decisions they are panicking and making changes everywhere.

What's worse is it's so difficult to keep up with the changes.

Thanks, interesting that there are reports of "notification" both before and after the reassessment date.

If the soft landing goes away I can understand why.. AA is doing it now and if more do it, then that is not unexpected, but I guess unfortunate to FFs who may have a bad year for whatever reason.

The loss of the soft landing whilst not unexpected will, I suspect become a point of difference between Qantas and Virgin. At the very least it is an opportunity for Virgin to do something different that may be attractive to their current and potential new customers.

I do hope there is a long term vision within Qantas on what these major changes are meant to achieve and how they will be communicated to their customers.

Are there other status based membership organisations which have soft landings?

If there is no soft landing with QFF, CX and MPC will look far better, with the primary benefit of lounge access at the Silver level when flying CX metal. Awards are not greatly different and CX upgrades likely considered far more transparent (and accessible).

And who says that QF doesn't cooperate with CX

It will be interesting to see what happens with AA. Changes to award costs and intraUSA benefits at the EXP level could produce un-intended results.

Happy wandering

Fred

If QF does take -- in my opinion, yet another another short-sighted -- decision and end the soft landing approach, I'd strongly urge them to 'grandfather' it so it's phased out over a period - say 2 years, so a WP for example could drop to Gold then silver, after that no more. Suspect a lot of people would be very unhappy with a no-notice complete drop, especially if at the end of your own status year with no chance to rectify.

Not sure how official the soft landing policy actually is, but termination would be a major reason for me to ignore QF and OW in general in many circumstances in future.

I have a 30 Sept reassessment date.

Been WP for 4 years and last year earned exactly 2400 status credit, 1200 the year before.

I wouldn't make it this year with 660 earned, and perhaps another 200 planned only. So far only taken 2 qualifying flights. Hoping for a comp this year based on my SC earned over the last 3 years (avg 1,420). Will need to find the time to take the other 2 qualifying flights though.

Unfortunately, Cogh, I think you have little chance.

As a soft landing has never been an 'official' QF policy, no one should be unhappy (in any way) if they are awarded the status they actually earned in accordance with the terms and conditions of the program. Members are given a full year to 'rectify' any SC deficit they may have to the status level of their choosing.

Not really a question of happy versus unhappy.

Just one more data point in evaluating whether to fly/credit to QF related entities versus other OneWorld carriers versus Star versus Skyteam versus LCCs.

Given the existing responses from many long term high status QFF members to previous changes, I would hope QF management would ponder long and carefully the potential results of changing/terminating more "QFF benefits"

Happily wandering elsewhere now
