I have posted a couple of threads in this forum re a planned trip to the USA in 2015. Like all holiday planning the trip has gradually changed  from travelling up to Newfoundland in May then USA trip,
to East Coast USA in September and home via Hawaii. Have finally locked the trip down to LAX > Halifax NS > Cape Breton Island > Prince Edward Island > Boston > New York > Washington > San Francisco > Lax & home. Hawaii will now be a separate journey :p

Done most of the research on all but SFO, clearly will do more in the lead up, but any tips on where to stay (5 nights allocated) would be appreciated.

Regards

SFO is a great place to spend 5 days, you will have a great time. I don't have time to write a big list now, sorry. There is so much info online, including an earlier thread on SFO from about 6 months ago.

My one big tip for California, esp SFO is to get the Yelp app on your phone. Yes it mostly sux here in Aus due to lack of content, but it was created in Silicon Valley and adopted wholeheartedly by San Franciscians.

Enjoy the trip, sounds epic.

I've just checked into the Hilton Union Sq in SFO. Pretty convenient location, huge hotel.

I've booked this for September. I was going to wait a bit to check price fluctuations, but then discovered Oracle OpenWorld 2014 is scheduled in SFO at the same time. The expected number of attendees is 47,000 and Hilton SFO is on their list of hotel suggestions. I therefore will not have very high expectations of service levels during my stay and my fingers are double crossed for a room upgrade with Diamond status. :-|

You might want to consider hotels in and around Fisherman's Wharf, it's one of the main tourist areas, handy for a trip to Alcatraz etc
From memory, there is a decent Sheraton there, also a Holiday Inn etc

I can recommend the Chancellor Hotel on Union Square. I've stayed in plenty of hotels 2 or 3 times the price and go back to the Chancellor. The service is 5 star, everything about the hotel except room size is 5 star. (note the hotel is historic and not air conditioned if you're there in high summer)

I always ask for a low room at the front to drift of to sleep listening to the cable humming under the pavement. :D I can't speak highly enough of this hotel.

If you do want a higher price and air con, any of the Kimpton Hotels in San Francsico are excellent.

I have no connection to it other than as a customer.

I noted the Chancellor and was keen on booking it - alas, booked out for my dates.

What sort of experience are you after in SF? What sort of budget?

Touristy area in fishermans wharf or union square for the more cbd location are two popular options.

As I said in my initial post still doing the research, less than $200 a night in accommodation is the aim.

Apologies for dragging up an old'ish thread - but looking for a recommendation on a good hotel for a few days (Sat 13th - Tues 16th Sept) in San Fran. Most good options are pricing out at over $450 night, is this normal for that time of year do you think? Appreciate any advice :)

Wow, depending on your budget, at those rates, staying near the airport (~$150/night) for at least 2, if not all 3 of the nights might be a sensible option - $900 gets an awful lot of car hire/parking, or taxi or BART rides....

Have you considered airbnb for an apartment rental?

For hotels if you want a good price in a great location. Try the Mosser. Not a big chain hotel and small rooms but you get what you pay for. I've stayed there twice.

San Franciscans?

I've stayed at Parc 55 Hotel. Very central, close to Powell Street metro station, Union Square, Westfield.
