Hi guys,

I'm pretty new to all of this but I've just received an offer from Etihad Guest and wanted to check with the gurus on here if what I am thinking is actually correct.

Below is the offer email:

This summer, you can earn up to three times more on eligible stays at Starwood Hotels & Resorts worldwide with the SPG® Earn Away promotion.

All you have to do is convert your earned Starpoints® to Etihad Guest Miles via spg.com.

This promotion is valid for stays until 31 July 2014, so hurry andbook today to enjoy more rewards than ever before.

I currently hold a modest 33,000 Amex Membership Rewards Points and have been waiting for a good offer to convert them to Etihad Guest (my preferred airline).

Would I be correct in saying that if I transfer my Amex MR points to SPG at a rate of 1000:500, I can then transfer my SPG points to Etihad Guest Miles at triple the rate?

Thanks for the help guys!

PS - If anyone has a better way to spend 33,000 MR points please let me know, I want to use them towards a flight to England.

Thanks!

PommySarah

The promotion has nothing to do with the SPG points converting to Etihad at 3X, its the SPG promo that you can earn 3X SPG points on stays and then convert them at 1:1

Mile earning newbies like me are very easily confused!

Apologies if the information is already available but I have searched quite extensively and cannot find it - what is the best way to spend / convert Amex MR points to flights to England? So far I'm thinking it's best to use their Webjet conversion - 12,000 gets you $100 worth of travel - is there a better way?

Thanks

That would probably be the worst way to redeem them.

I would look at either converting to Velocity (and getting the 10% bonus that is currently on until the end of may). OR go through SPG and then convert to AA.

Awesome, thanks zainman.

If I do go down the Velocity path, do you think this is a good deal? - Credit card affiliate - NAB Velocity Rewards Premium - NAB

$150 for 40,000 Velocity points?

EDIT - I'm not an affiliate by the way! I'm assuming this forum automatically marks all lnks to credit card offers as affiliate links?

yes I do believe it is a good deal actually.

It's a good idea to have a points goal in mind and then work towards it, so try using the calculator on the VA website to see how many you actually need.. You may even want to earn enough for a business class ticket! ;)

Ok more questions!

Amex MR points to Velocity conversion is 2:1 :( is this definitely the best way to spend them?

According to Velocity website, Melbourne to London on a 'Reward Seat' costs from 62,500 Points + $106.02 AUD Taxes & Fees, so I guess this is my target?

I'm wary of the word 'from', how likely am I to get a seat for this many points?

Which AMEX do you have? Sounds like the David Jones AMEX cards with a ratio of 2:1... Usually other AMEX cards are 1:1.. If your card does have a 2:1 ratio the best way would be to convert to SPG and then once you have 20,000 SPG they can transfer to velocity as 1:1 and a 5000 bonus will kick in resulting in 25K velocity for 20K SPG or 40K AMEX DJMR..

You can do a search for a sample flight on the Velocity website and it will give you a more accurate figure as to points + taxes. 62.5K does sound about right though, just need to double it for a return journey.

Yeah I've got David Jones - Damn! I thought I was being clever getting 3 points per $ spend at supermarkets but I guess this is the same as the 1.5 per $ offered with most standard Amex cards.

I only signed for for DJ Amex because it was 30,000 bonus points for $99 fee - maybe not such a good deal now....

I think I'll take your advice zainman and save up to 40,000 then transfer to SPG to get the bonus. How long does this bonus last for?

Have you had the card for long? I signed up for the Platinum version last year and then applied for the normal (black) one this year when the annual fee came up for the platinum. Got the black one and cancelled the platinum and took the 30,000 bonus again!

A good card to have for the Supermarket spend is the AMEX Platinum edge and the MR ratio for that one is 1:1.

The SPG to Mileage program transfer bonus has been on for some time.. I don't think you should be in a rush.

I'm pretty sure the one I've got is the Black One? I've only had it for two months, are you saying I can do something to get the 30,000 again!?

Yes the $99 fee is the black one.

You can get a higher bonus with the NAB card you mentioned before and I also suggest applying for other cards that may have higher sign up bonuses. Check the Velocity website for current offers.

Though I knew this to be incorrect, the way this is written is ridiculous
it says convert via spg.com so the average person would think go to spg.com and send the pts over to EY for 3 X

Agree, I was taken by it until I did some digging.

I wouldn't really recommend it. The DJ Amex (non Platinum version) is fantastic for SPG but nothing else as it's inferior compared to the Platinum Edge for all except that (DJ is 2:1 across the board whereas PM is 1:1 except SPG at 2:1). SPG is great for AA where you end up with an effective 1 Amex point to 0.625 AA miles. This is very useful considering there is a purchase cap of 80K miles per year (max 120K with a 50% bonus promo).
What credit cards suit you is highly dependent on how much you spend per annum and on what. It also is naturally tied to your credit score (how many cards can you apply for) and how much you earn (what cards you can apply for, i.e. how premium can they be?).
Feel free to PM me if you want some more specific advice on what CCs and FF programs might suit your earning and travel goals. P.S. I'm Melbourne-based too.
