Just booked a stay at the end of the month at the IC London Westminster. I am a IHG Plat member but was going to sign up for ambassador for the room op-up.
I made the booking through agoda.com to get Velocity points but I couldnt add a hotel loyalty number nor does my reservation number work when I check on the IC site for my reservation. If I join ambassador, does anyone know if I can add my number to this booking even though its not through IC? Do I just ring as ask them?

Booking through a third party often means you wont get any benefits of the hotels loyalty program. I would email the hotel and ask them if they will honor the ambassador benefits on the booking. I am not sure but I suspect the hotel often gets incentives to sign people up to Ambassador on the spot, it could work to your advantage in this case. The hotel has a reputation for upgrading Ambassadors to Club rooms without club access, which can be bought for 57 pounds

Thanks Markis!
I couldn't turn down the 6000+ points I will bank for velocity over ambassador !
I have emailed them so guess wait and see! Hope it works!

I'm in the same boat... having booked the IC London Westminster via Qantas for a cool 10,000 point bonus... I am an IC Platinum Ambassador, and we check in tomorrow. I'll report back with how it goes!

Having just read through the T&Cs on IC Ambassador Benefits, I don't see anything relating to the type of stay or rate - outside of crew or reward nights - which is likely to impact on the upgrade. Certainly, it is unlikely that the stay would be eligible for any IHG points, but the 10,000 I get from Qantas easily beats that in any case...

From the IHG Rewards Club T&Cs:

InterContinental Ambassador Benefits: A room one category higher than purchased will be assigned upon check-in to InterContinental Ambassadors. InterContinental Ambassadors will be entitled to a late checkout time of 4:00 pm. Ambassadors receive fresh fruit and water in their room on arrival, with mineral water replenished daily. Ambassadors receive a personalised welcome letter and in-room gift. Ambassadors are entitled to one free Pay-TV film per stay (where a cost is applicable). Ambassadors with IHG® Rewards Club Platinum status are entitled to guaranteed room availability with 72 hours advance reservation. When staying on Reward Nights, all Ambassador and Royal Ambassador Privileges apply with the exception of upgrades, free Pay TV film per stay, 24 hour guaranteed room availability, 8:00am early check-in and complimentary mini-bar beverages (where a cost for these benefits is applicable). Ambassadors are charged Single Rate for Double Room Occupancy. Any Club Lounge access given to Ambassadors is solely at the discretion of the hotel and is not a benefit that is included in Ambassador status.

Its often classed as an ineligible stay under the Rewards Club : most rates booked through most third party web sites.

For points, yes, but not for Ambassador benefits... at least from what I could find.

In any case - just checked in at IC London Westminster with a Classic King booked via Qantas, got the Superior King (was pre-arranged, from the IHG number in the booking comment)... was further upgraded to Executive King as SWMBO preferred a better view... :)

Ambassador is classed as a part of the rewards club and many ICs won't give benefits for non qual stays.

Quite interesting this one is... not only did I get the IC AMB benefits... I also just found I was credited with IHG Rewards Club points for the stay! It actually shows as follows in my recent activity in IHG:

May-18-2014Non-Qualifying Stay1,000 pts.

Cheers.
