In the SYD Domestic J Lounge today, and I noticed that new glasses are being introduced for the small-sized tumblers. They are a bit taller than the previous ones, but appear to be narrower. I was a bit skeptical, so had to test the hypothesis: were the new glasses introduced in order to 'save' some money by deliberately reducing the standard volume of liquid held in the tumbler?

And the results? I'll let the pictures tell the story.

The old:

The new:

Result:
Given the height of the liquid from the rim of the glass is slightly lower in the old, and seeing that the old tumbler is slightly fatter than the new, I'd like to suggest that the new is slightly smaller in volume than the old.

Has anyone else observed similar minor changes across QF which are helping to contribute to the $2billion of savings? (Hmmm... I wonder how much it cost to the replace the -- I'd like to think perfectly adequate -- glasses to achieve this 'saving').

Minor change to volume but at a cost of replacing all your glasses?

I see no noticeable difference in volume, especially when you factor in that the old shape has more glass on the base so that the liquid starts from higher up. In any case, the difference, if any, appears to be negligible. It's much more likely that when it came time to order new stock the old glasses weren't available. There's nickel and diming, but this would be halfpennying and centing.

At best I see about 0.5cm of difference IF that!

Considering that water, orange juice (breaky only) and post-mix goes into those glasses the TINY saving per glass (if any) would be far outweighed by the cost of the glasses and would probably never be recouped

Also the old glasses were getting quite scratched and worn out

A bigger cost saving would be the lack of bacon in the J lounges. It used to be a mix of bacon/sausages in the warmer, but my last 6 visits (MEL) it's only been sausages which no-one touches. IMO in a few months they will remove the sausages due to "lack of demand" and it will be just scrambled eggs left as the "hot selection" for breakfast

That is a cost saving, not a 15ml saving in a glass

Of a one glass, might not be a lot, but multiply that by the number of drinks per day, that would make up a lot.
Plus, if you add ice to your drinks, this reduces the amount of the real stuff, esp grog, doesn't it?
I will from now on, do a blend of orange and apple juice, 1/3 of each, plus a bottle of cider to make the last 1/3.
Apple cider on its own is sour, but if you do the blend just right, its lush.

On the topic of bacon, it might possibly be that its to do with now, that there is a possibility of more guest from the UAE flying, eg, maybe they might be using the QF lounge for flights to NZ, flying with QF and when not flying EK, and as we all know, bacon is against (the eating of) the Muslim religion.
So, it might be for this reason that bacon has disappeared, this is just pure supposition.
And that sausage might just be chicken now, and not pork.

As the QF lounges are now operated by Accor I would suspect any savings and/or cost of new items is to Accor's account.
The details will be/may be in the QF-Accor contract. But that is not for us passengers to know

Accor takes over Qantas lounges to help domestic push

HOSPITALITY group Accor Australia will take over the operations of major Qantas domestic lounges as the airline hones the premium facilities as a major weapon in the battle for business and government passengers.
Accor, which already runs Qantas international lounges in Sydney, Melbourne and Singapore under its Sofitel brand, will take over the Qantas Club and domestic business lounges in Melbourne from November. Sydney and Brisbane are expected to convert early next year with other capital cities following.

I hope that is not the case otherwise bacon will be banned around the entire planet. Certain groups are entitled to their beliefs and opinions and I fully respect that, but when you visit a foreign country you have to accept the local culture and if that includes bacon, so be it. We should not be pampering to a minority or indeed EK's wants, if indeed that is where the directive has come from.

If you really want to test your theory you'd need to use water, without ice, and fill up both glasses to the rim, and then pour the amounts into a measuring jug and measure the amount from each glass.
Now if you where paying by the drink, one could almost understand any size decrease as an attempt to save money, but of course since all drinks are free, including beer wine and spirits, it's hardly going to be a big money saver, esp once you factor in the costs of replacing all the glasses.

to me the new glass looks like a nicer shape to hold. but they are all too small anyway. I don't drink alcoholic beverages, and it is annoying having to refill my glass every other minute because my 2 sips emptied the glass. Maybe that is why they are so small - but post mix is cheap so I couldn't imagine a company trying to scrimp and save on coke.

Agree, but I think the new lounge managers aren't very good overall, my opinion but there seems to be a decline in small increments since they took over.

Looks like a proper test is required tomorrow night and all I will need for the test is to be thirsty and 2 bottles of Hahn Super Dry. ;)

Thanks for the tip re: Accor and QF "agreement of contract of provision of service". Didn't realise it had started, the "outsource" had started even then (last year).
Anyways, so far, I have been into the BNE int, SYD dom, ADL dom.
Will be putting more effort in testing the rest soon, including PER dom, hopefully the early afternoon snacks will be "nice". And hope the view is still the same of the runways, it was up the 2nd escalators inside dom security, rises up. But with the PER airport redevelopment, my dream of watching PER QF airport ops might be down the loo.
Sorry for the threadjack.
Going back to bacon, I would not be surprised if thats the reason bacon has "disappeared".

They've introduced smaller beer glasses as well. Current ones in the ADL lounge are 360ml. The SYD J lounge glasses look pretty much the same. Saves for caught beer, but the stubbies are about 25ml short when poured into a glass. Potentially making people drink more stubbies
