Heads up about program changes

Just re-reading the email, the fine print says

" Qantas Segments booked in X, U, Z or P classes are eligible to earn points and Status credits only when booked as part of a Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Award. For details..."

Doesn't this suggest Any Seat Awards are still able to be booked?

So, Red Roo ... I imagine you will be wanting to sincerely apologise to this forum? I know this may not be the same person as "you", and management have a nasty habit of double crossing everyone ... but "Red Roo' made this statement. So a simple, gracious apology would be nice.
Why apologise?

Qantas is making a loss on these so called marginal any seat awards and you want them to stay "forever" to keep a few people on AFF happy earning easy SCs and lifetime Status while Qantas struggles to survive?

I think Red Roo has done a great job letting AFF know first hand and it was not their decision anyway. Thanks Red Roo. I hope Qantas survives.

And apologies to those who used Any seats awards for necessary travel.

To those who simply wanted to have fun and gloat by doing BNE-KTA via MEL and PER on double SCs offers or those doing ADL-BNE-TSV and nesting TSV-BNE-DRW in there as well and those doing CBR-SYD-HBA to gain status. The program has evolved. Find another way.

Here are my thoughts on the changes:

The QFF program in its current form is actually extremely generous. Status credit and point earn rates are huge. Basically, earning and retaining status on Qantas is much is easier compared to some other airlines. I’ve done quite an in depth comparison between the Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qantas frequent flyer programs. I compared status (or tier credit, Q points etc etc) earn rates on certain sectors. For example, if I used a CX or QR FF number and flew other oneworld airlines in J, I would require almost double the amount of status credits, or Q points etc to move up the ladder (and therefore double the amount of flights) than I currently do with QF. In short, retaining my current Platinum level with Qantas is much easier, quicker and more economical than if I jumped ship to the CX or QR program and attempted to attain Emerald with them.

At the end of the day, status tiers are there to reward frequent flyers who actually fly regularly or spend large amounts of money on premium tickets, thus being “loyal”. Tier status should not be for those people who waste their time, money and points on “status runs” just to attain the next level so they can access the F lounge an expect a free upgrade on their twice yearly vacation to the US (for the purposes of doing status runs on AA….). The demise of MASA’s is sad but not surprising and in the long run, I think it’s best if top tier levels like Sapphire and Emerald are reserved for those who actually earn it, not “buy” it. Otherwise what is the point in having these top tier levels to begin with if they are easy to attain, thus making them less exclusive? Status privileges such as F lounge access, upgrades, priority seating should be reserved for those who actually deserve and earn the status, and fly regularly. Sorry, I know I have just severely pissed off more than half this forum.

So, I think considering the difficulties QF are currently facing, these changes make absolute sense. If that means I lose my Emerald status and have to downgrade to Sapphire because I no longer earn as many SC’s etc, then so be it. If I don’t meet the criteria to retain Emerald, then I should not be entitled to it. Those who travel consistently and regularly should be rewarded with privileges.
At the end of the day, entire frequent flyer program is a privilege, not a right. It’s free. When you book a ticket with Qantas, all you are really entitled to is a seat on the flight you paid for. Anything else such as free points which can be used to purchase more flights, products or services or SC’s rewarded to you are a essentially a free gift.
Once again, compare the Qantas Frequent flyer Program to other airlines and even with these changes, it’s still quite decent. I remember in around 2004 when United Airlines changed their Mileage Plus Program meaning that the minimum points earned for a flight was only 500 not 1000 (I think it’s even less now…?). Here we are 10 years later and Qantas have only just changed this. Maybe it’s not so bad after all!

As for all those banging on about going to VA – I hope that works out for you. VA suck. They tried to emulate and copy the QFF program and have failed. They will always be number 2.

By the way, I don’t work for Qantas and am not affiliated with them in any way. I’m just not going to get my knickers in a knot over changes (to a FREE program) that make absolute financial sense for a Qantas.

It's not all bad for discount Y flyers eg. JQ MEL-DPS on a Plus bundle goes from 25sc/2,719pts to 40sc/3,900pts.

I just compared the SC earn from the trip I took last year (DAS13+DONE3+5 extra short flights [in L and N] total 31 sectors) and what I can muddle out of the new tables.

2440 (old) vs 1880 (new)

I first checked the first post and it does not have any "likes" so suspected this announcement might be on the cards. When mASAs disappeared from the online booking system, I knew it was a matter of time before they were removed.

a simplified Qantas and Jetstar earn table
I do not see how the new table can be described as simplified???

Ok have looked at the tables and challenge all on here to tell me what F flights are available Domestically?

According to the new table Domestic Australia Short flights in First will earn Min 1800 points and 60 SC

Please Oh Please tell me where these flights are to and from???

Or is this just another example of Qantas's piss poor communication planning and knowledge of its products offerings !!!!!!

This type of announcement has been in the planning for some time and I fail to understand how these sorts of things can get through with such obvious errors.

Makes me wonder what else they are not reviewing properly... Maintenance Plans records and procedures????

NOT IMPRESSED QANTAS

This seems a tad contradictory to me:

Q: When do these changes take effect?
A: The changes are effective for travel on and from 1 July 2014. This means if you book on/before 28 March 2014, for travel on or after 1 July 2014 you will earn Qantas Points and Status credits in line with these new Airline Earning Tables.

Q: What if I've already booked?
A: If you have flights already booked (booked and ticketed on or before Fri 28 Mar 14) for travel on/after 1 July 2014, you will earn the Qantas Points and Status credits that applied at the time you made your booking. The applicable Qantas Points will be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer Account approximately four weeks after the dates of the flight(s) taken.

yes, I'm working through this thread trying to get an answer to that. Hopefully I'll find one soon
My FIRST take on it is that, sure, we can book MASAs until July 1, but if travel is after July 1 there will be no SC and points?

Whilst I guess the demise of mASA's was inevitable, it is a very disappointing move on Qantas' behalf. Whilst I understand that Qantas has hit upon "hard times" it is hardly the fault of their loyal frequent flyers, which is exactly whom this move punishes the most.

Myself as I very loyal QFF'er, and one that brings them significant revenue, I feel that this move of Qantas' shows no loyalty to their most loyal customers.

As a customer I, like the rest of you, really only have the power of our feet and our purchasing dollar. As a result of this move from Qantas, I'm going to show them the same loyalty they have shown us and let my feet walk my domestic dollars to VA and my international dollars to OneWorld partners (crediting to AA). Sorry Qantas, but we, the FF'ers, have to ask ourselves what is in the relationship for US! The answer now, not that much!

So...anything booked on partners from tomorrow but flown prior to the cut over date will be at current earn rates?

Been planning a FJ J to LAX in May. Can anyone say what SC this will earn?

Well, 'enhancements' have been rolling out steadily for a while now.

WP Anytime access is gone
JASA/MASA's are now going, going, gone
New SC earning table (more than likely people will earn less SC's)

It almost seems like QF have a 'anti-fun' brigade and if there is a good thing going, they stop/shut it down.

We only really have 1 alternative (Virgin), but for Int, there seems to be more options.

So, is there anything worthwhile to keep people to stay with QF?

I wonder why QF did not put this in the email

Its easy to find other airlines to fly with
Is the AA Frequent flyer the best option if one wishes to remain in the OneWorld umberella? How do the Cathay , BA or JAL programs stack up? Also, if most of one's flying is to Europe, is the Emirates program worth a look?
I took the punt about 6 months ago to go for Plat with Virgin with DSC offers, now I am glad I did. Not sure how keen I will be to maintain Plat with QFF. I will study it all in more detail over the next few weeks.

As a totaly loyal Qantas flyer for the last 20 years and noticing the service getting worst and worst this is the final straw,
virgin here I come!

I think staring at all these new tables too intently might induce nosebleed...

I'm sure the FlySmiles scheme from SriLankan Airlines will solve all our problems on May 1st :D

I'm about as loyal a Qantas flyer as there can be, but even I'm pretty pissed off. I've read through the details and with these changes I'm going to earn a lot less points flying so they have effectively been devalued. And reduced SCs for flying with OW carriers? What a load of cough... If QF flew everywhere I might forgive them but the fact is that they currently fly to fewer places around the world than ever!

I have a feeling this will push a lot more people away from Qantas than it will get people to buy over-priced flexible fares.

As for the marketing fluff, most people will see right through it. These are NOT positive changes for customers.

Seriously, how are the complicated new tables "simpler" than the very simple system we have now??

I have no other reasonable option out of Perth but to fly CX or MH.

The whole thing sucks. Where is Perth on the new earning table anyway?

Was wondering the same thing for ADL?? I'm totally confused - where does SA/NT fall in their geographic selection?
