The US must think we are close, sending the black box detector with its tower array.

Well we're halfway to losing contact with it so if they find a suitable site, trying to listen for some pings would be a great idea.

I know they have buoys all over the ocean to measure all sorts of things... shame large expanses of water with buoys couldn't be fitted with the equipment to listen for things like this. Could pick up all sorts.

" ... objects were spotted in the search area about 2500 kilometres south-west of Perth by the RAAF Orion about 2.45pm (AEDT)". That's over eight hours ago.

One of the news crews has footage.

Since edited re: time

AMSA says they should release video ~ 2300 AEDT.

I was having a beer tonight with an ex-RAAF P3 pilot at the Aero club and he too had a take on this tragedy. He mused over whether a broken coughpit window may have decompressed the aircraft so quickly, the crew could not don masks but managed to turn the plane back before passing out, only to have said plane continue on until fuel gone and glides into the southern ocean.

Nothing on the AMSA website.might mean they have released it to the media.

What a horrible thought for passengers.

I took it to imply pilots gone fairly quickly as coughpit decompressed relatively quickly being a semi confined space, but could take ages to decompress the rest of the plane via one little window

the wiki guide says explosive decompression is less than .1 to .5 of a second, and rapid decompression is anything more than .5 of a second.

from the same guide you will see a windscreen failure on a BAC 1-11 caused a rapid decompression.

Made some interesting flight changes if that were the case.

How long to pass out at that altitude?

I know their initial response of casting doubt on the pilot and copilot, who's actions may have been heroic in the circumstances, did not leave a nice taste.
I suspect that this was as much media focus as it was the Malaysian authorities. My take is that the authorities were open minded on what the cause was, but were checking out all the options, and I don't think they even started with suspicion on theflight crew.. They certainly became more careful in their language after they realised how their words were being taken.

Time of Useful consciousness is approx 30-45 secs at 35000 ft depending on level of activity. Much less higher up. I recall that at 45000 it is a matter of seconds.

I think they have found MH 370.... MH calling for urgent meeting with families in Beijing in 30 mins followed by media conference by Malaysian PM at 1am AEDST

A plausible theory if, after that turn, the aircraft just kept going straight ahead, or at a consistent angle. But we know from the radar that it didn't do that.
