So I've booked QF128 HKG-SYD for 16 Apr (Wed), and only just realised when doing seat selection after booking that this flight is operated by a 744; normally Wednesday flights are A380.

What are the differences in PE cabin between the 744 and the A380?

Is it still worth burning 25k points for the upgrade to J?

It should be an old config with 14 First class seats (Seat map for QF128 on April 16 below). So J will be MKI seats.

It seems that normally Wed flights are 744:

The current schedule sees the A380 operating only on Thursday to Sunday with a Boeing 747 on the remaining three days, although an A380 will take over the Monday flights from November 4.

From March 4, the schedule will revert to an A380 from Thursday to Monday and the Boeing 747 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Not sure how the recent QF announcements of cost cutting will affect the A380 services though (I didn't keep track about what they said about the remaining A380 deliveries)...

I think so, it could be the retrofitted birds, but possibly not.

I don't think so - 127/128 offer an F service as part of their normal timetable - even on the older 747s. Refurbed birds don't have F.

no point upgrading i wouldn't have thought. You have the lounge access and all other benefits by virtue of platinum. The only thing you are missing is an angled seat. i would say PE is about right unless you bought business class and wanted to upgrade to First.

4 across PE doesn't sound great to me though.

but presumably you'll be getting a seat in the 2 block on the side?

The 747 main deck is mych wider than the upper deck a380. So 8 across on the 747 is not much different to 7 on the a380

It also depends on what other use you might have for the 25K points.
If they're simply festering in your account, why not use them?

I did this flight two weeks ago or so on a Wednesday and it was an A380. Was there a temporary schedule change?

Yes, in the link I posted upthread, it showed the A380 was operating daily on 127/128 from 2 Jan to 3 March 2014.

Now the regular timetable has the 744 on Tuesday and Wednesday and the A380 on the remaining days (Thurs to Mon).
