Hi again all,

In a never ending quest for extra points and SCs, I need some advice regarding connections in SIN.

I'm thinking of doing the following:

3K698 HKG-SIN arriving 17:30, then
QF78 SIN-PER departing 19:45, giving a 2hr 15min connection time.

These would be ticketed separately, and I'll have one checked in bag. I've transited SIN before, but only on through tickets. My research so far tells me I will have to go through Immigration & Customs, collect my bag, check it in, then go back through Immigration & Customs.

Would my connection time allow this? (On time performance for this flight may also be a factor)

It would certainly be easier if the bag was interlined, but I'm not hopeful. Does anyone have experience with this? I see lots of info interlining QF>3K but not the other way around.

Cheers

Hi - a few comments.

1/ Assuming 3K flight on time - the 2 odd hours is plenty of time
2/ Don't think they will check bags through at HKG (but you can ask I guess), but even in SIN, I don't think you need to clear customs. Just go to the airside transfer counter and they can sort things out for you (maybe will save you 15 mins or so?). Even though you are flying budget, they will help you out because it 3K to QF

All I can say is I've done 3K to QF a few times now (but not from HKG) and they interlined luggage. It seems to depend more on the originating airport (staff?) than the rules. Expect it not to happen and enjoy it if it does.

I nearly tried this a couple weeks ago out of HKG but ended up not asking. What I can say is 3K uses the same contractor + check-in desk as Emirates & a bunch of other carriers with the in town check at Kowloon so they might be competent/inclined enough to do it.

Coming the other way SYD-sin on QF and SiN-HKG on 3k was no issue, bags were not checked through but the transit counter rerouted them and provided boarding passes on the spot.

Flew 3K coughket to Singapore on 7 August. Then flew QF to Sydney. 3k wouldn't check my bag thru, but one arrival at SIN we went to the transfer desk (was D desk from memory). They were able to print boarding passes for QF flight as well as put the bag codes in the system. Someone found our bags and recoded them to be on QF2. We didn't clear immigration or have to recheck our bags. Was awesome.

I've read it before, but it still amazes me how efficient and customer friendly Changi is.

Thanks for the info all. Looks like I'll give it a shot - will let you all know how I get on. Cheers.

HI All,
I flew 3K HKG-SIN then QF SIN-SYD same day flights 2 weeks ago, on separate tickets. The 3K check-in staff would not check my bag through.

Never hurts to ask anyway...good luck!

Thanks for the info banger2. I've just seen that the connection time for the flights I was looking at has reduced to 1h 45m, so I'll probably take an earlier 3K flight to make a longer and safer connection.

Out of interest, were the transfer desk able to find and retag your bags, or did you collect them and check in again? If you had to collect them, how long did that take?

Cheers

You'll get no love from 3K when you do your first check-in. They actually handed me a pamphlet on how to transfer in Singapore but it isnt totally relevant as it is for transfer to Jetstar who use a different transfer desk.

The transfer desk in Singapore was simple. All you needed to show was the details of your next flight and maybe your passport. The whole process took a maximum of 10 minutes. they found our bags and retagged. They will also print your boarding pass. Definitely try this first. This was you do not need to clear immigration.

I had 4hrs between flights so was in no rush, I collected my bags and rechecked. My arrival was smooth and easy, I walked from the plane, 3 or 4 in immigration queue, my bag was on the belt when I got there, no waiting at checkin...all in all I guess the process was less than 30mins.

I didn't think I might be able to get the transfer desk to arrange it. I'm doing the same process in early October, I might try it that way next then
