A ‘conference’ in Las Vegas, and a few days in NYC.

My first trip report, so please go easy on me. I’m going to try and make this a running trip report.

This trip had a rather stressful start.

First Legs, the original itinerary, all booked seperately:
5 April, MEL – AKL in J on QF.
6 April AKL – NAN – LAX in J on FJ.
6 April LAX – LAS in P on AA.

The reason for booking it this way was two fold – firstly, as I only booked this trip in December, there weren’t any J award seats on QF anywhere – not from MEL, SYD or BNE. Secondly, I noticed that I could get a J seat, all be it an angled lie flat, on FJ for 84,000 points…but the best part was the taxes - NZD$84.60. This seamed like a no brainer to me considering my only other option was in Y or PE on QF and around $500 in fuel fines.

So I booked a QF partner award with FJ. The original schedule had the AKL – NAN leg leaving at 1pm. This meant I couldn’t get to AKL from MEL in time on the same day – an overnight was needed.

I had work on in the morning, so couldn’t grab the EK Business seat on the A380 (bummer), instead opting for QF153 from MEL to AKL on 5 April. Snagged it for $598 in J which I thought was pretty good! I’d booked the Hilton Auckland for the overnight (an easy op to grab a stay credit) and all was well in the world.

Then the trouble began. It all started on the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] of April, four days prior to travel. There were quite a few schedule changes that happened rather quickly one after another. First, it was only incremental delays in departure, then on 4 April it changed from 1pm to 6pm. This was annoying as it would of meant I wouldn’t of needed the overnight in AKL – saving me about 300 bucks.

It was around this time I started getting a few calls from FJ – each time I missed them. The voicemail said there was a schedule change and that they were offering passengers a direct flight with Air New Zealand from AKL to LAX.

My initial reaction was Business Premier on Air NZ – a superior product (from what I’ve seen, never flown) to FJ. I got excited and called back. The agent I spoke to on the phone actually said that it was because the flight was oversold and so they were offering a direct flight on Air NZ – I asked for the flight number on NZ so I could confirm what aircraft it was etc. And said I’d call back. It was NZ18 – they were calling it a direct flight, even though it was via the Cook Islands and on a 767 – it wasn’t lie flat in business and the thought of spending 13 hours in an inferior version of QF Dom’s J class seat wasn’t appealing.

I called Qantas and told them that I decline with thanks. Was told no issue.

5 April, 5:30am. A phone call wakes me, I don’t answer. A voicemail is left advising me of a schedule change to the AKL – NAN flight which will cause me to miss my NAN – LAX flight, and advising I had been accommodated on the 10am Air New Zealand service from AKL – NAN.

I call Qantas to confirm. The Qantas agent told me that I’d been moved to the Air NZ flight and that it was in economy. I wasn’t happy about this and told her so. She advised me to call FJ as even though it was QF ticketed flight, FJ had moved me to Air NZ.

I call FJ. It was honestly the most painful 20 minutes of my life. Imagine the worst Indian call centre you’ve ever encountered. No, imagine that this lady made Citibank look like the BEST call centre you’ve ever dealt with in comparison.

All she kept asking me was did I wish to confirm the flight change, despite me saying no, as it wasn’t in business class. I was told there was nothing she could do as it was a ‘frequent flyer point booking’. I told her that it didn’t matter blah blah but she couldn’t help me.

This was at 1130am. My flight to AKL from MEL was at 4pm.

I call Qantas back. I get Paul from Melbourne. He is a god-send. Truly world-class customer service. He was shocked that I hadn’t been offered ‘like for like’ and that there ‘wasn’t even an offer of compo’ or ‘at least a reduction in points’. He is having a hard time going through all the remarks on the booking due to the repeated schedule changes.

Says he can’t find who’s in charge at FJ but will follow up with a supervisor and call me back in 30 minutes. Promises a resolution.

He delivers. Above and beyond.

He said he couldn’t believe some at FJ said I had to wear the flight change as it was an award booking – he advised that it is considered a paid booking as QF pay FJ for the flight. He offers me two solutions – one I take. He offers travel on 6 april, MEL – SYD on QF in J, SYD – NAN on FJ in J and NAN – LAX on FJ in J. He also REFUNDS my MEL – AKL QF J flight. This also means I can cancel the overnight in AKL saving me more $$.

In his words, ‘we’ll just bill Air Pacific, that’ll learn em’. I was floored, if Red Roo is reading this, Paul from the Melbourne call centre is the reason is a true asset to your company. He truly saved the day and I was immediately relieved.

I pitch up to Dom check-in in MEL and the agent says ‘Oh, we have a problem – I don’t have a ticket here’. 10 minutes and a few phone calls later, it’s solved, and three boarding passes in my hand I head to the Lounge.

No pictures of the Dom J lounge at MEL, we all know what that looks like. A GREAT coffee from this morning’s barista though.

A special page for me to the Business Desk. Lounge Angel asks if I wouldn’t mind moving from 1A as she’s trying to seat a couple together in Business. I oblige, doing my good deed for the day. Accept 1D instead. The two gentleman sincerely thank me once on board.

My heart always sinks a little when I get to the entrance to the plane and see it’s an un-refurbished 737. Still, it was a comfortable flight with an enthusiastic CSM. Personally, I prefer the more relaxed approach this CSM took.

Three options for this ‘refreshment’ flight. Bacon and Egg sandwich, cold ocean trout tart with rocket, or fruit salad. All served with yoghurt and berries.

I opted for the Bacon and Egg sandwich, as did my seat mate. Was certainly tasty, though a little hard to cut through on the tray.

In at Gate 3 it was a short walk down to Gate 15 for the transfer to International. A short wait for the bus, and we were underway. Passed a/the JQ 787 parked on a distant apron on the way to T1 – my first glimpse of the plane.

Through the express lane and hardly a wait at Customs, security fine too.

Alas, no one to guest me into the F lounge, so it was down to Business Lounge. Plenty of families about – I guess because of school holidays.

My first time at SYD International since Accor took over earlier in the year. Spread looked decent, though seems much the same as the Domestic lounges.

In addition to all the salads they offer, there was a beef stew with mash potato. I’ve never seen so much oil – I assume it was olive oil? – on mash in my life. It was pooled all over the top of the mash. It was a fresh batch, so maybe that’s just Neil’s style?

Boarding began at 1230 so I schlepped it down to Gate 36. Premium Boarding in operation so managed to skip most of the long Y queue.

Menzies Aviation seemed to be the Gate staff, and no welcome whatsoever, not even a thankyou back when handing back the boarding pass made me appreciate the courtesy Qantas staff seem to give all passengers.

A much more friendly ‘Bula’ and smile when boarding the aircraft from FJ crew.

Comfortable seat with good legroom. Lots of little cubbie holes for stuff. Bottle of Fiji water under the middle armrest. Great looking TV. Seat ‘feels’ narrower than QF Dom but probably isn’t. My only other gripe is that the tray table is really hard and awkward to get out and to stow. Didn’t sleep on this flight, so will be keen to see how the angled lie flat goes on the next leg.

We were presented with the Menu prior to take off and orders were taken.

Anticipating an unhealthy few weeks ahead, I opted for the Vegetarian option. Not sure how healthy it actually was

No peppermint tea, so opted for a Green Tea to finish off lunch.

Crew were attentive, but then disappeared after food service. Water bottles offered halfway through the flight, but was never asked if I’d like another (alcoholic) drink.

3 hour stop-over in Fiji. I think the Duty Free stores occupy the same amount of floor space as the actual terminal!

Very average lounge. I'll stick to the waters - food looks very average.

I didn’t eat any of the food in the lounge, because it looked really bad – lots of people were though. I simply made use of the wifi. It’s not a large airport, in fact, I would say that there is almost as much floor space for duty free as there is in the rest of the terminal.

It was quite busy upstairs, so I was glad to at least have the peace and quiet in the lounge.

I was assigned 4D for the FJ910 flight to LAX. It’s the last row of the cabin which I wasn’t thrilled about, but it didn’t seem to make much difference. The J cabin was completely full, and I reckon 10 or less empty seats in Y. Very full flight – as I heard a number of people remark, they were shocked that the flight was so full, and even more so when informed it was a daily service!

Shortly after take off, the menus were handed out and the meal service commenced for dinner. Breakfast orders were also taken.

When asked if I’d like a drink, I asked for a glass of port to come out with dessert. I think something must of got lost in translation, as the glass of Port came out shortly after and the desert came out with entre.

I opted for the Chicken Lasagne which to be honest was a bit of a disappointment…just not that great. The other thing that I find mildly annoying, and I think adds to the feeling of FJ not being a premium carrier is the lack of cutlery. Am I wrong to expect a separate spoon or fork in order to eat my dessert or main meal?

A good size, and good quality screen for the entertainment. I did have a stuck pixel on mine though which was annoying. Selection was good, about 10 or so movies to choose from (plus another two pages of Indian films). Plenty of TV shows and Music too, though I didn’t really check these out. After a movie, it was time for sleep.

Pillows, a duvet and blanket were handed out – as well as a basic amenity kit.

I didn’t get a shot of the angled bed, but it was OK to sleep on. I’m 6’1 and was able to comfortably stretch out. I like to sleep on my stomach, but this was almost impossible due to a number of factors, so I found the side and back most comfortable. I reckon I got about 5 hours sleep.

Breakfast, and the usual rush for the bathrooms. I did have the omelette, but must of forgotten to take a photo.

We touched down in LAX and a long taxi to the gate. Arriving at TBIT, it must have been the furthest possible gate from the baggage claim and customs. I would have to say at least a 10 minute walk.

After the third degree from the extremely happy customs guy, it was a 10 or so minute weight for bags. As they were interlined from MEL, I was VERY happy to actually see my bag!

A short walk outside to Terminal 4 and check-in at AA. Through TSA (hate having to take my shoes off) and off to the Admirals lounge. I’ve heard all the negative reviews of the AA lounges on AFF, but I didn’t think it would be that bad….suffice to say it’s pretty basic. I claimed a free bottle of water and did a little work.

I decided to stretch my legs and do a terminal walk after being sedentary for 10+ hours. Not much to see! Surprising for an international terminal.

Back to the lounge and after re-scanning the boarding pass, another two drink vouchers. I gave these away to someone else as I wasn’t in the mood for alcohol.

A fairly uneventful, 48 minute hop to LAS in 4F. Couldn’t grab a pic – I get to embarrassed if people see! – but I did get a little star struck as Vincent Laforet was across from me. He was heading to NAB as well.

A change of terminals to collect baggage and a 15 minute wait after eventually arriving at the carousel. Not too bad I guess considering the distance the baggage has to travel!

I opened my Uber app only to be disappointed. All it had was a pop-up urging Uber users to make some noise about old laws in Vegas stopping Uber from operating – I guess the taxi mafia are winning the fight at the moment!

$15 dollars in a cab later (Vincent had a driver waiting, cough) and I arrived at the Tropicana.
 
On arrival there was a general registration line, and a separate lane for Hotel invited guests and HHonors members. With two people in the general lane, I opted for the HH lane. Despite having three staff on the HH Desk, I wasn’t helped for quite some time (only one of the three had guests with them). In the interim, a further six people joined the regular lane and all were served before me. I lost that round!

So I wasn’t off to a great start, and the icy reception for the check-in agent wasn’t helping. I politely enquired if there was an executive lounge at this hotel – and humorously she didn’t know what I was talking about at first. She mentioned there was a Diamond check-in lounge (as she motioned to behind glass doors to my right) but that it was just for check-in and there wasn’t a general Diamond lounge.

At this point, it seemed that the reviews I’d read online about there being not much point of this hotel being in the Hilton brand were starting to ring true.

I asked if I’d received an upgrade and was told I had (I hadn’t) and was also told about the free continental breakfast for HHonors Gold’s + Diamonds, she made sure to underline the word continental on the paper slip so I wouldn’t forget and gave me a voucher to redeem a DT cookie at the South Beach Café.

Off I trotted to the 18[SUP]th[/SUP] floor and Room 1818. This was directly across from the lift, despite my profile requesting otherwise. It was also very smokey.

I opened the door and instantly my heart sank a little. It looks and feels tired. It’s a shame, as I always book a Hilton property where possible, and have had great experiences in Asia and Australia, but for this to be my first US room since becoming a Diamond, I was disappointed.

It was a dingy as it looks in the photos.

It does have a view of the Excalibur and Luxor Hotels etc. Road noise is present, but I forgot about it once in bed.

Disappointed with the room and the smokiness, I called the Front Desk and requested a new room, perhaps a bungalow. Was told the only other option ‘would have a view of the parking lot if that’s what you want’. I said OK and was told to head to the front desk.

After some reflection, and 30 hours travel, I couldn’t be bothered and just wanted a shower. Called back and cancelled. Did ask for the two bottles of water though, as they were missing - gotta make the most of that $20 resort fee!

After a shower, I spent the next 2+ hours walking the strip, all the way down to the Venetian, via a few of the shopping centres and back. Stopped at Walgreens to get a power adapter, and at Fatburger for dinner.

Crashed in bed just after midnight.
 
Up at 545 to head to the Gym. Annoyingly it’s only open from 6am to 7pm. It’s also pretty basic.

Breakfast. Wow. Probably the worst I have experienced at a Hilton hotel. It’s more like a school canteen.

The queue was MASSIVE as it serves as cheap breakfast for other guests, not just HH members. After waiting an age, and seeing a few people abandon the queue, I arrived at the front. HH members can select four items from the continental list.

Not very appealing. I took two fruit cups and a bottle of water and left for the convention center.

ProTip: I headed past AT&T at the end of the day to pick up a pre-paid mobile hotspot. It was $150 bucks for the unit and 5GB of Data. I can use the hotspot at home on Telstra when I get back, and the data means I can check google maps, and the internet and use iMessage all without turning on cellular data! Winning!

I’ve got three more days of convention and then a day or two free, so I welcome any suggestions on what to see and do and eat as it’s my first time to Vegas!
 
Enjoying the report. Welcome to Vegas. I've stopped expecting anything beyond ordinary at major chains in places like Vegas, so to avoid disappointment.

Hire a car and get out of town - especially the Hoover Dam. Its only about 2 hours to Death Valley or 4 or 5 hours drive to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.
 
Dinner at Wicked Spoon at The Cosmopolitan last night. I’d read online that it was favourably reviewed because of the tapas style servings – this appealed to me because I’m not a fan of the massive vats of food you sometimes get at buffets.

The queue was only 10 or so deep when I arrived around 8pm. Though I was bemused to see the amusement park style crowd barriers that snaked around – this place must get busy.

I was shown to my table and was impressed by the size. There was a great selection of food – extensive salad bar, seafood, carvery, sushi and other Asian delights, as well as a mac and cheese station cooked to order! The desert bar was huge.

Oh, and the desert bar was huge! It was 38.99 from memory.

I stopped by the Casino, but wasn’t really feeling it. Put in $20 and walked away with $84 – that was enough to cover lunch and things for the next day so I was happy at that.
 
I thought I was impressed last night. That was until I saw an ad on the back of a taxi for the Caesars Palace buffet and headed their tonight.

Wow.

I can see why it was voted #1 Buffet in Las Vegas by USA Today.

It was impressive. A much longer wait to get in tonight – you join a queue to pay, then join another queue to wait for a table. This one was a little more expensive, $55 with tax excluding tips.

But it was worth the premium over Wicked Spoon. Sooo much to choose from and the food was of good quality. Some dishes were hit and miss, though the majority was excellent.

Great cheeses, an excellent selection of sushi and delicious fresh salads. As well as a heap of meats (which I didn’t eat), and an Italian station with meatballs, pastas and pizza, HEAPS of seafood – they seem to go crazy for crab legs here…

And again, the dessert buffet was incredible. I definitely over induldged and will be up for a run tomorrow morning. I also decided I had to walk back from Caesars to the Tropicana to try to undo at least some of the damage from two buffets in a row!
 
Enjoying the TR. Walked passed Bacchanal late Dec - the queue was impressive! The place averages over 3,000 customers everyday of the year :shock:
 
JMFK, can I ask what camera you use thanks. It doesn't look like you use a flash for interior shots, and they look good.
 
Just the trusty iPhone. All the pics in this thread are shot with it. But I never use flash, regardless of the camera!

I just recently bought a Canon G16 which makes beautiful images for a point and shoot camera...but you have to remember to take it!

I took it out today around the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon. Once I've posted them you can check it out!
