Hi all, have just started planning our 30th anniversary trip for the end of next year and early 2019. Just wondering if it's possible to get this on one J class redemption ticket, Queenstown - Auckland - Sin - Munich. AKL - MUC is straight forward, it's getting from ZQN to AKL. Can this be included in the redemption or would we need to purchase a separate paid ticket for this leg? If it is possible, do I do this as a phone booking as I can't seem to make it work on the website.

Hope the above makes sense and thanks in advance for any advice.

Just call. In theory it should be possible provided NZ has availability. I don't think it breaks any rules regarding backtracking. It would be a standard star alliance award. See what they say.

Agreed, this should be no problem as long as NZ has award availability on the AKL-ZQN leg.

I usually use the Aeroplan website to check for NZ award seats (to get some idea of what’s available before calling)

I have tried various dates to find AKL-ZQN J class but without success, so I think NZ does not release J seats for their domestic(or even international) flights for redemption on Star Alliance partners programs. So I ended up booking J class for the international part of my trip into AKL and then Y class for AKL-ZQN even though I was charged J redemption points for the entire trip. I don't think you need to purchase separately for the domestic leg if you are happy to take the Y seat for the doemstic flight and then J for the international part.

Hi, there is no domestic J on NZ

As cambrianmarsh points out, no J class on domestic flights, and you would (correctly) be charged at the 'through fare' number of points per the highest class of travel on the whole itinerary.

Hi, there is no domestic J on NZ
Not only was there no J class with NZ domestic, but I also suspect there is no J class for trans-Tasman flights in A320 as well, as I can't find J seats redemption for NZ flights across the Tasman opearted by A320 but available to be redeemed on 777 or 787.

That's why I was happy to take the Y seat for the domestic as I know the AKL-ZQN leg was a freebie anyway. So as long as I get the long flight into AKL in J that will keep me onside.

Correct. A320s can redeem in 'X' class only.
