Really.Cancel the Olympics due to Zika?
There are much higher risks.Dengue is also prevalent in Brazil.10-20000 die of dengue each year world wide.Severe dengue haemorrhagic fever and shock was first described in Central and South America.
A pregnant woman infected with dengue may pass the virus to her unborn child.Severe dengue is more common in infants.Complications of dengue in pregnancy include foetal death, low birth weight and prematurity.
Dengue occurs in Far North QLD.Should we all stop visiting Cairns?

International Health Expert has recommend it and NYC is on Guard

Although much remains unknown about the effects of ZIKV infection during pregnancy, population-level data from French Polynesia and Bahia reveal a clear association between first-trimester ZIKV infection and microcephaly risk. The pattern was probably similar in other parts of northeastern Brazil, where Zika outbreaks in early 2015 were followed by microcephaly outbreaks in late 2015. If the risk of infection and adverse outcomes is similar in the other geographic areas where ZIKV has since spread, many more cases of microcephaly and other adverse outcomes are likely to occur. In light of the growing evidence, it is prudent to take precautions to avoid ZIKV infection during pregnancy5 and for health care systems to prepare for an increased burden of adverse pregnancy outcomes in the coming years.

Seriously, the ZIKA craze has reached the utmost of "bad science"

ZIKA is a short term minor ailment in adults. They go out (with their focus on grabbing funding) and interview pregnant mothers and ask them if in the preceding months they suffered any symptoms that could be ZIKA. Notwithstanding these symptoms are the same as for many other mossie-borne problems. They DO NOT DO a test that confirms ZIKA. If those mothers, living in the jungle, suffered anything at all, then they get classed as ZIKA victims. This is appalling. On so many levels.

This little trend will soak up billions of dollars. Flavour of the month. In Colombia we still have atrocious levels of AIDS, and malaria, and all the old non-flavor of the month things. But the scant dollars will now be spent on ZIKA. Because it is hip.

That's crazy do doing tests confirming Zika who else do you get your statistics ?

<snip>

Travel to Brazil ??

The Rio Olympic Games must not proceed — that is the warning from an international health expert who says the Zika virus poses a bigger threat than many authorities are willing to admit.

This week the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) issued a statement saying "athletes can head to Rio with confidence, knowing the appropriate measures are in place against Zika".

At the same time an article published in the Harvard Public Health Review, by Professor Amir Attaran of Ottawa University, warned Zika was flourishing in the Brazilian capital and posed the potential for a global catastroph

Wow. A "global catastrophe". Sounds like the good Professor's next funding review might be coming up. And the "international health expert" sounds a bit of a tosser.

Please explain? ;)

Some of the stats are pulled out of the proverbial ...........

You have to do serology testing to find out numbers infected or antibodies against the virus to extrapolate its spread, percentage infected etc etc.....,

That's why in NYC they are a "Zika a city on guard" .... Testing pregnant mothers etc .....

Cost $$ the above link is from NEJM ( look up the thread) and further up I did screen shots when in NY

A lot of the stuff is unknown and hence they spend $$

A major problem with Zika is that (to my knowledge) there is no reliable way of confirming it after a week or so. Testing for antibodies is well known to produce false positives, because exposure to other diseases (especially dengue) will also give a "positive".

It is certainly possible that Zika is evil and causes microcephaly. But my alarm is that the epidemic of unsound beliefs about this virus has swept the globe far quicker than any virus itself.

Seriously, when it is almost impossible for Western doctors to test for it after the fact, what do we expect of the quality of research in the jungle of Brazil? Within months, it has been "confirmed" everything from microcephaly to sexual transmission.

I understand that this is a great opportunity for the less financial countries to get huge injections (sorry) of cash. But as usual, the money goes where the news headlines are, not where the biggest health problems exist. I suppose given that fact doctors and anyone else who relies on research money, make such a noise about it.

please don't immediately place me in the loopy bin, but just maybe this is a sign that people have to start learning to live with Nature, not think they can fight it and win.....

Too many snouts in the climate change trough for that to happen.

Can't be good for Brazil this close to the Olympics
Especially Raw sewerage being dumped into the ocean.
No swim zone here

Olympics is in ICU. Last round of Winter Olympics bids only got 2 - Kazakhstan and Beijing. They gave it to Beijing - it has less snow there than Jindabyne. The exorbitant spending can only come from countries whose politicians have no other spending priority other than their own agendas.
