You don't get points for booking any seat awards with Virgin, you do with QANTAS

I'm a bit of a newbie to this and it was more difficult than it should be to figure it out from other threads so I'd thought I'd post it straight up. You don't earn points or SCs on an ASA with Virgin. I explicitly asked them just to make sure and was told that you do over the phone. Not convinced I emailed them and got this response:

Membership number:

Dear Mr Tiffen

Thank you for your recent enquiry.

Please be aware that Points can only be earned on flights you purchase, not those for which you have redeemed Points.

This is outlined in the terms and conditions:

6.17 Unless otherwise specified, Points, Status Credits and Eligible Sectors are not earned for the following:
6.17.5 tickets issued as Air Rewards, including Any Seat (Points Pay) bookings;

You can view these terms and conditions on the Velocity website at

Had to remove some links and images but I'm sure you can find them. I'm silver currently and it looks like you can't do the points for SC dump by booking business.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks for posting paultiffen, this is correct.

For what it is worth, a DJ representative at an AFF function earlier this year was asked if there were plans for DJ to introduce a similar concept to QF's ASA awards (i.e. earning points and SCs)...the reply was yes, but with no detail or time frame specified. So it may come.

Whilst ASA's with QF are good value, ASAs on DJ are very poor in my opinion. The running wisdom here is to book Flexi Y on DJ and use points to upgrade to J, after checking of course that upgrade buckets are available (fare class is Q). If you do this the flight returns SC's and FF at the flexi rate whilst the money and points outlay is only modest and is probably better value then QF's ASA's depending on your preference in airline of course.

Yep - you just have to use each program in different ways to maximise the benefit.
