Just tried to upgrade Flexi fare BNE-CNS-BNE & there was no Z class available.
The lady I spoke to at the call centre advised that as of today, I can "waitlist" for an upgrade.
(Which I did)
They will advise via text if successful as late as 4 hours prior to flight.
The loading of my flights in J is very light according to expert flyer (yeah I know, not definitive but....)

Will see how this pans out.

Thanks, it took a few people but managed to get waitlisted for my next big trip. Very helpful :):)

Tried to do the same thing in the MEL lounge on Saturday and he told me there was no upgrade availability, but he'd 'waitlist' me. First I'd heard of it so must be new!

Added to the waitlist for a SYD-AUH flight in June, let's see how this pans out. Currently zero seats selected in J for that flight, so it's surprising that all the upgrades have supposedly been exhausted...

Anyone have any success? I'm "waitlisted" for a flight tomorrow, though it looks fairly full (2 x J seats left)

I was waitlisted for a Dec 25th Syd>Melb flight, on 10am 20th December got an email saying upgraded :)

There were no sold seats in J and no released reward seats so I thought they were going to string me out until T24 so very happy to see the email.

Anyone else manage to break the upgrade page? I have it showing me $ value for the upgrade now. It even requests a credit card but won't let me enter any details in.
I'd pay $720 for return business upgrade!

I've just been placed a wait list BNE LAX return for March 3rd and 20th. Looking at the seat selection, there's only 30% sold on the way there and almost 50% sold on the way back. I was talking to a Platinum Velocity team member who advised that it's a gamble really and it's up to Virgin to release more seats to Velocity. I do find it somewhat strange that they wouldn't want to sell out J and take people's points instead of allow them to squirrel them away in the millions. Granted I'm not flying for a fair few weeks and J might fill up completely. I also asked if it was possible to upgrade at check-in or at the gate, looks like it's a no go unless you're paying with money or they're super nice and comp the upgrade as neither set of staff have access to the point system.

I'll let you all know how it goes!

Is this exclusively for platinum?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Checking in to see if anyone has had a waitlisted flight and how it went?

In the past I found reward seats are released 72 > 48 hours prior to flight but platinum upgrades are confirmed from 5 days out. By the time the seats are released if they continue to follow the usual timeframe they will be up for everyone to grab making the platinum benefit redundant? This is all speculation though and yet to see a real world example.

Just a head ups for people 'waitlisting' for upgrades.

It doesn't work!

Out of precaution I have been checking for business availability for my upcoming LAX flights and noticed today there was. Had to call up to confirm it, so it looks like they don't automatically assign it to those 'waitlisted'

Do you mean that you had to manually upgrade over the phone Celph? I am interested as we are waitlisted for J upgrade in August SYD-LAX-SYD and I've heard rumours that one should still check the website every day. And by availability, do you mean J Reward Availability or just vacant J seats to purchase?
Sorry for all the questions....

yep, had to manually upgrade over the phone. And I was referring to J reward availability.

I booked about 36 hrs prior to departure on Wed night.

Rang first thing in the morning and was told that I couldn't be waitlisted as no seats available.

Rang again that afternoon and was put on the waitlist, but the way she explained it is that the upgrade can only be confirmed if a reward seat becomes available.

Went to the lounge the next morning prior to departure an there were six seats available apparently.
