From news.com.au:

AIR France-KLM's safety record has come under harsh scrutiny as a shock new book added to the problems facing Europe's biggest airline as it prepared to announce record losses. Yet it didn't beat Russia's Aeroflot as the world's deadliest airline.

Someone help me out here. How did they determine the deadliest airlines? And is this for 2009 or in history?

I can't find a direct link on the Aircraft Crashes Record Office that defines or offers that particular statistic.

And yes Aeroflot might be a deadly airline but surely there are some African airlines that also get on that list?

I'm sure there are some African airlines on the list. However, have a read of the Salon Pilot - Plane crashes, media errors begin - Ask the Pilot - Salon.com - who makes a valid point in that the African airlines that will be on the list will be the cargo carriers and other charter airlines, rather than commercial passenger airlines. The commercial passenger airlines, on a whole, have as good, if not better safety records than the other European / American airlines.

It would also be interesting to see which of the Indonesian airlines are on the list considering they are banned from European airspace.

From my reading of the article, I assume they are talking about the total number of fatalities in accidents involving the airline since the airline started operations. So that obviously is biased against airlines with a long history and does not adjust for changes they may have made in recent times.

Many such African airlines do not have a long history and generally operate small aircraft (B737, A320 etc), so will need a lot of fatalities to get to the numbers of some of the older airlines that have lost a few large aircraft. Its always possible to manipulate statistics to extract the results you seek.
