...well that's what the ticker in the Breaking News section to the SMH online read a few minutes ago.

Naturally, I had to click on the link, only to find the full headline rather more revealing.

Qatar rather than Qantas

Interesting that Qatar ranked no.1 when it did NOT get no. 1 for First Class, Business Class, Prem Econ, nor IFE??

Wondering if the little leprachaun will get his knickers in a twist over this from the same awards:

The Best Airline in Australia / Pacific region

1 Virgin Australia

2 Qantas Airways

3 Air New Zealand

4 Jetstar Airways

5 Air Pacific

6 Air Tahiti Nui

7 AirCalin

8 Tiger Airways Australia

Very simple, dont close down an Airline without warning and not expect repurcussions!

Interesting that Qantas ranked No.1 in Y+

Wonder what rank that'll slip to next year, post A380 reconfigurations?

Although Qantas did get worlds best first class lounge for their Sydney lounge. Which is good considering it didn't seem to get much recognition in the past from Skytrax.

So it did! That is deserved, I think. Funny that SMH have wrongly reported Qatar as getting the award for best first class lounge - even though they came 2nd!

Best first class lounge - Qatar Airways (Doha Interational Airport)

Don't get me wrong, I love the lounges, with the SYD F-Lounge being simply excellent. But if that is where QF (and lets be fair, most airlines) are putting their effort there is something wrong. A lounge is simply the most comfortable place to wait in an airport terminal. My couch at home is just as comfortable, and when I put my chefs hat on, I can produce food just as nice as the chefs in the lounge. What I can't do at home is travel from SYD-LAX (excluding playing flight simulators), and that is where the comforts are really needed.

(For the purpose of this post, we'll ignore the fact that F-Lounge runs exist)

Why do so many people take Skytrax seriously? I've given up posting any reviews on airlinequality as they just publish what they get paid for. Especially Qatar- I have tried to publish bad reviews on their product several times and none of them ever appeared. Got some friends to try- same thing. SKytrax is obviously bought. And if you've ever been on one of Qatar's coughpy short-haul planes that they use on mid-haul routes than you know instantly that it's not the best airline in the world. Not even close in my eyes

of those that I have flown I would rate as

1. Cathay
2. Thai
3. Emirates
4. Malaysia
5. Turkish

Have to whole-heartedly agree with assessment re Qantas first lounge at Sydney -- just lovely -- and their PE service is terrific (although exy).

Surprised though about JAL rocketing up the rankings. Have flown them a couple of times in PE and found them a bit ordinary. Other than my OW Emerald status which provided access to their lovely First Class lounge a Narita, I suspect I would have found the experience a little disappointing.

One absolute accuracy here: BA not within top 20. Flying them in March PE SYD-LHR en route to Rome and not looking forward to the trip!

Re: Worlds' Best Airlines - Who Agrees?

The surveys are rubbish, who honestly believes;

- Jetstar is better than JAL.
- Tiger is better than Royal Jordanian.
- Air Asia is better than British Airways.

Relevance to their markets and customers?

I think Air Asia is a great low-cost airline. I think BA is a terrible premium airline.

Re: Worlds' Best Airlines - Who Agrees?

What a load of ****e. LAN doesnt rate in the top 20? Great lounges, superb food and wine, generally great staff, great planes. Not saying they should be no.1, but not even in top 20???

"Qantas has ranked consistently in the top 10 airlines in the world for many years, however following the industrial campaign by several unions which disrupted thousands of passengers we anticipated our ranking may slip," a Qantas spokesman said.

It's ALWAYS someone elses fault. This industrial action (not the CEO's decision to ground the airline) was obviously the only reason the ranking slid this year. The previous 3 years of sliding must have been passengers anticipating the industrial action?

They should get Gerry Harvey to replace Alan Joyce.
